An excerpt from a Castrol Oils page:

Tony Longhurst, born in Sydney on October 1 1957, started his racing career in the 1983 Queensland Gernini Championship. He then stepped-up to the Alfa Trophy series at Sydney's Amaroo Park and at the end of the same year he drove a Camaro at Bathurst with the late Mike Burgman. The following year he again returned to the Gemini and Alfa series, but mid-way through the year he joined the JPS BMW team, partnering Jim Richards.

Group A racing was introduced in 1985 and Longhurst concentrated on development initially before finishing third outright in
the Amaroo Better Brakes series. He paired with Richards to win the Castrol Sandown 500, bringing home the car ahead of
the second JPS BMW driven by Neville Crichton and George Fury. Both cars ended up in a sand trap at Bathurst a couple of
weeks later and four laps were lost as they were dug out before they finished fourth outright.

Longhurst went on to win the Benson and Hedges Series in New Zealand and the Benson and Hedges six-hour at Pukekohe six weeks later. Longhurst won the Better Brakes Series in 1986 in a JPS 323 BMW, was fourth in the Australian Touring Car Championship and sixth at Bathurst. Richards and Longhurst were in identical M3 BMWs in 1987 and Richards won the ATCC and Longhurst was again fourth. They teamed to finish sixth at Bathurst, which was counted as a round of the world touring car championship, but were later upgraded to fourth after the disqualification of the two Texaco Sierras.

The JPS team disbanded at the end of 1987 and Longhurst went on to set-up his own team - He chose Ford Sierras as his
cars and ran under the Freeport Motorsport banner. Frank Gardner, who was boss of the JPS team, was used by the team as
a consultant and Longhurst was both driver and team manager. In September the sponsorship switched to Benson and Hedges
and Tomas Mezera joined the team for the long distance series.
