RADIOHEAD

August 15, 1997 @

the State Theatre, Detroit, MI, USA.

My favs are Colin and Ed

BEGINNING: It begun at 6pm, when my net friend Dianne ,whom I had never met before, picked me up at McDonalds near the border in Windsor. We were worrying we'd be late because the doors open at 6:30... and, well, when we got there there was a huge line around the building. We (Dianne Laura and I)were pretty upset that we probably wouldn't get good seats. Then, as we were waiting, and security guard and Thom walked out of the stage door and disappeared right into their trailer (which was a little bit in front of us) I couldn't believe I had just seen Thom, he was so... short (he's as tall as me, and I'm around 5'6) . The line started moving and we took our seats on the balcony, but managed to move up to the front row on the balcony (it's general admission)

TEENAGE FANCLUB: Teenage fanclub opened for Radiohead. They were okay, I have a lukewarm review for them. Not much to say except they all have very thick (irish?) accents and have pop-ish sound. If you like Oasis though, they claim that TF is the second best band (after them ofcourse %| ).

RADIOHEAD: They begun the show with a recording of Fitter Happier, and appeared on stage... everyone went wild. It's amasing how many hard core fans there are. The show was great, Thom never failed to hit the right note with his voice, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Ed especially amased me when he did the background for Thom at the end of paranoid android, he has such an nice voice that I never knew about.Jonny was also running around constantly to make those odd noses with his guitar and keyboards and xzylophone. Here's the playlist to the best of my knowledge:

Fitter Happier
Lucky
Exit music [for a film]
My Iron Lung
Airbag
Fake Plastic Trees
Bones
Let Down
Bullet proof... I wish I was
Subterrenean Homesick Alien
Just
Talk Show Host
Paranoid Android
Nice Dream
Climbing up the walls
No Surprises

Encore
Creep
Street Spirit [fade out]

Encore 2
Thinking About You

I'll add more as I keep on remembering them :) I'm happy that they
played all my favorite songs : Lucky, Thinking About You, Nice Dream
and Creep.

THE REALLY COOL PART: This part is why I liked this concert better then all the rest, I know before I met Graham, but this time I met ALL of them!! Jonny and Ed and Colin and Thom and Phil!! They're really the most normal famous people I've met, they actually want and go out of their way to meet their fans!

My pic of Thom

So, after the concert we raced to the stage door incase they would come out, the guards made us stand in a line against the wall with all the other people. I met this cool married couple that wanted to get Thom to sign a check for them (they Bono did, so they'd try Thom) and showed them my picture of him. I just hoped that Dianne (my friend)'s sister wouldn't come early and I would have to leave right away like all the other concerts I went to.

First THOM came out and everyone rushed up against the barracade, he seemed the most reluctant to say anything. My friends encouraged me to break through too, and I finally got to him, gave my picture to this person more in front then me and she showed him my picture of him. He asked who'd done it and I said me, and asked him to sign it (he gave me this cute little smile :) I think he thought I was making fun of him, or maybe because it looks so much like him and he knows it, heehee) Then I kind of let some ppl go in front of me, and just listened to him talk to people until he went into the trailer.

After Thom, JONNY came out. He was very nice, and has a slightly higher pitched voice then I had imaged. I showed him my picture of him and he said it was very good, and I asked him to sign it at the bottom. Some people complemented him on his awsome guitar playing and he said thanks, a few moments later he went into the trailer.

After Jonny, COLIN came out. He was very friendly and was joking around alot. I had him sign my picture of him (his sig's really cool) and sign my t-shirt (I didn't think of it before) He stayed the longest of them all, was talking about this author that he had heard about (someone gave him a book, inside I think it was a comic) he even said a liner for this guy where Thom refused to.

Before Colin left, PHIL came out. He looks somewhat, um,cuter in real life then the videos or pictures portrait him. I showed him my picture of him which he thought was nice, and then asked me if I wanted him to sign it (I made him repeat it tho because I couldn't understand him the first time he said it) so he signed it , and then singed my shirt too. Meanwhile Colin is to my left and Phil is to my right, and I pretty much just listened to them both talk. Colin mentioned that they're show in Vancouver was kind of screwed up and that they might do a real canadian tour sometime this year or next (woohoo). Phil left first, and then Colin went into the trailer a few minutes later.

It was longest waiting for ED to come out, we were wondering the the hell he was doing in there anyways. Ed was the best... he came out and walked right to my friend Dianne, she has him sign her poem (he started reading it and she sort of freaked out because she didn't want him to actually read it, but it was to dark to anyways) He didn't have a pen or anything, so I offered him my pencil, he took it and used it to sign a few things, but then someone offerend him a marker and gave me the pencil back. (And now the pencil is hanging on my wall next to the graham marker...j/k) I showed him my picture of him (I told him I had tried to draw him) and he said that yeah it looked like him, and he was worried about wrecking it, so I let him use my pencil.. and then he actually wanted to see my other pictures (I said sure, ofcourse!) He said there were good and that he really liked my Thom one, that it was very beautiful :-) I asked him to sign my shirt too, and he made this weird, almost japanese looking "ED" on it. Dianne complemented him, that this was the best show she had ever been to and he said something like "really? we had alot of fun at this one" ( this being the first tour that they're not an opening band.) I wanted to stay longer, but Dianne's sister was waiting for us so I had to leave..

LENO: I'm not sure who said this, I can't really remember, it was either Colin or Ed... probably Colin: someone mentioned that they did great on Leno, and he thanked him, and then said that it was hard, that Leno told them they had to play something upbeat, because he was afraid that the Friday night audience wouldn't watch something of a softer taste (like alot of radiohead's songs) so they had a hard time deciding what to play. Someone then said that they'd look forward to seeing them on Letterman, and he said "how did you know about that?" and the person said something "like never underestimate the internet"

CLOTHES: if anyone out there is so obessed that they care what they were wearing, Ed had a black fitting shirt, with khaki pants ; colin had on a white tshirt with brown cords (i think) thom had on a dark shirt (and jeans?) I think jonny had a red shirt on but I'm not sure, and I have no idea what phil was wearing.

Okay, although a lot more was said, I don't remember enough to make it make sense (sorry :B ) I hope this review hasn't been too confusing or babble filled. I will hopefully maybe have some scans of my autographs (atleast the Thom picture) soon. Meanwhile...

Go Back To Concert Reviews

If you're wondering, Thom ended up filling out the check for them :) Although he filled in the amount too, I'm not sure for how much

If you noticed how I keep switching from Jonny to Johnny, that's because I'm not sure which way he spells it...it's probably Jonny, I dunno
