Teen Magazines and Why They're Evil

I'm really getting sick of all those "teen" magazines. I've disliked articles such as "Lose 20 Pounds in Time for Bathing Suit Season" ever since my pre-teen days of trying desparately to fit in. (By the way, I never did fit in.. my love of Heavy Metal, dark lipstick, and ripped jeans prevented me)

Being happy while growing up is hard enough even when you're not trying to live up to some difficult-hard-to-reach standards set by the forces we know as YM, Seventeen, and Teen. The standards are either cumbersome, impossible, or costly to attain.

These magazines shouldn't impose the "right" way of doing make-up on young girls (most of which are probably too young to wear it anyways). The magazines have started to cover their tracks in this area as more parents have written in to complain. However many of these magazines will swear that they've never recieved any letters from disgruntled parents. Anyhow how do these magazines cover their tracks so they can say they don't promote really young girls wearing make-up? Well once every so often they print a letter from a young girl in one of their columns complaining that her parents won't let her wear make-up. Of course the answer to letters of this sort always contain compromising, sympathy toward the girl, but more often than not siding with the parent. But yet the models they feature look as young as 12 or 13 and these models ALWAYS have on lot of make-up. Mixed signals I think so!

The incredibly tall, skinny models they portray in fashion spreads communicate the idea that what is shown is what is beautiful. It is not possible for most of our population to acheive looks such as these. Designers and clothiers don't make it any easy when the largest size available in all the hottest fashions is the equivalent of a size 11.

On top of everything else the make-up, clothing, and care products featured in Teen magazines are normally quite expensive.

What is one to think of an industry who's only purpose is trying to make young girls into something they're not? This industry is making money off of low self-esteem and the desire to fit in. The girls who fall prey to these magazines need to take a good look at what's written on the oh-so-sacred-glossy pages and think about what's in their best interest and if what's on the pages coincides with what they want.

And at a time when most young girls are getting to know themselves, love themselves, and find themselves they don't really need magazines telling them how to dress, look, and how to lose weight. At this time in a girl's life they need to know how to eat healthily so they can grow to be strong young women. They should be learning to accept themselves for how they are.
