Jill's new project : www.coolerkids.com
(04/18/02)
The Dusty Trails official website has been revamped and apparently a new album will be released soon. The band will also play another show : April 28 2002, 9PM, at The Slipper Room, 167 Orchard Street, NYC.
(04/06/00)
Attention Dusty Trails fans : the band will be playing at Barrio (99 Stanton St -- between Orchard & Ludlow)in NYC April 9th 2002. Show starts at 9PM and costs 5$. Kate Schellenbach (Luscious Jackson) and Max Olivier will join Vivian and Josephine on stage. Needless to say this is a rare performance.

In other news, Jill Cunniff is apparently involved in a new music project called Cooler Kids. She will also be one of the judges for a Jane Magazine music contest. Details are here if you want to enter. There is also a rumour going around that Ms. Cunniff gave birth to her first child (supposedly a girl) last August. So if it's not just a rumour, congratulations to her and her husband.

Totally unrelated to Kostars, let me just plug a band called Sing-Sing, comprised of ex-Lush guitarist Emma Anderson. If you want to hear something new, songs like "Feels like Summer", "You Don't Know" and "Émigré" should please the ears of the Kostars fan. I've got the album and I'm sold. While I'm at it, please check out Eleni Mandell as well. The lady is a perfect blend of PJ Harvey and Tom Waits, complete with her country and blues influences. Ms. Mandell is frequently on tour, catch her live if you can.

A few Vivian-related news bits:

  • The winner of the Dusty Trails filmmaking contest has been announced. For more info and a link to the winning film itself, click here.

  • The Russell Simins album, on which Vivian appears, is out on Grand Royal Records. Read more about it here.
  • (08/23/00)
Obviously, I have no real news to report, except that Dusty Trails have launched a film-making contest. If you are cinematically-inclined, read about it here.

And if you're like me and occasionally check for a pulse on the official Luscious Jackson site, you'll have noticed that sweet Fanny Adams has taken up much of the space. Let me advise you though, that a certain www.jillcunniff.com domain has been reserved and in construction, so I suggest you look for any signs of life there, however unofficial it could turn out to be.

    (06/20/00)
The Dusty Trails Website has been updated once again, complete with reports on Vivian Trimble's adventures across America in the form of e-mail correspondances between her and Josephine Wiggs. With photos.

    (05/19/00)
Dusty Trails held a 40-minute chat session at gURL.com yesterday. Although the fan turnout was rather disappointing (many had a hard time just finding in which chatroom it was held), Vivian and Josephine managed to answer quite a load of questions, most of which were asked by Ed and myself, at the risk of being quite an annoying pair. Anyway, the content ranged from soundtracks and films, to Luscious Jackson, Russell Simins and a dog named Satchel. The chat should be archived at gURL.com eventually.

    (05/17/00)
Dusty Trails chatted on MSN.com May 15th. I wasn't there and hence cannot tell you what was discussed (if someone ever finds the archived chat somewhere, let me know), but they will again lend their fingers to the computer keyboards May 18th, 6:00PM Eastern Time, at GURL.com.

Also, please go to DT's official website and bask in the glory that are their new design and more-in-depth info. That is all.

  • The Dusty Trails record is out today on Atlantic Records, and the latter have put up an exclusive video segment of the ladies talking about the project. Check it out here.

    (05/03/00)

  • As you probably know by now, Dusty Trails' eponymous debut will be released May 9th. Atlantic Records have put up a nice little webpage on them, which comprises sound clips of a few songs. I believe that CD Now has quite a few excerpts as well. Here's the track listing:
    01. Pearls on a String
    02. You Freed Yourself
    03. Spy in the Lounge
    04. Est-Ce Que Tu...
    05. Roll the Dice
    06. St-Tropez
    07. Unhand Me You Wretch
    08. They May Call Me a Dreamer
    09. Fool For a Country Tune
    10. Regrets in Bordertown
    11. Order Coffee
    12. Conga Style
    13. Caught in a Dream
    14. Dusty Trails Theme

And just in case you haven't yet, be sure to read Luscious Jackson's parting words on their official site, as the band split up after 8 years together. All hope is not lost however, as they're all working on other projects. Good luck to them. R.I.P. LJ.

  • Here's the gist of an email I received from Vivian Trimble:

Dusty Trails have finished polishing their first effort, which is now due to be released on May 9 2000. The album will include Kostars song "Roll the Dice", which was recorded by the ol' Kostars live band, namely Vivian Trimble on keys and vocals, Jill Cunniff on guitar and vocals, Josephine Wiggs on drums, and Sara Cox on bass. I think it's time to do a little dance of joy.

    (01/31/00)

  • The Dusty Trails Website has been updated again, this time with actual samples of songs taken from their upcoming debut album, set to be released in May 2000. I suggest you surf your way onto their site and enjoy the Kostars-reminiscent sounds of "Est-ce Que Tu..." and "Dusty Trails Theme". The band is also supposed to tour in the spring.

    (11/05/99)

  • From the Dusty Trails Website:

"Dusty Trails has just signed with Atlantic Records and our debut album, a tasteful melange of instrumentals and songs, is due for release April 11, 2000."

The website has been updated and comprises new sections (and a new picture of the band) so I suggest you check it out.

The band also has a song ("They May Call Me A Dreamer") on Jane Magazine's fall CD sampler.

    (09/06/99)

  • Dusty Trails sent emails around early this August explaining what they were up to. If you haven't read it when it was cut and pasted on the Luscious Jackson mailing list, here it is:
Thanks for writing to us -- it's great to hear from people who are into what we're doing -- even though few have heard it yet! Dusty Trails' latest news is that we're signing a record deal as we speak -- we're nearly finished recording an album, a tasteful melange of instrumentals and songs, due for release next February. In the meantime, we aim to get some music on our website, so check it out once in awhile. We also have a track on the Fall CD Sampler put out by Jane Magazine. Titled "They May Call Me A Dreamer," it's one of the first songs we recorded and features Viv on vocals and keyboards, Jo on stand-up bass and guitar, with drums by Kate "LJ" Schellenbach. (Kate played on several songs we recorded for the album, but has now resumed her day job, as it were, with Luscious.) On the subject of playing live, we probably won't play any shows till our record is finished, but when the time comes, expect to see sequins and sparkly bongos... check the website for further information.

    Love from Jo and Viv

P.S. The album Viv is doing with Russell Simins (Blues Explosion) and Rick Lee (Skeleton Key) is nearing completion, and is scheduled for release on Grand Royal in February.

  • My source in London (Ed) had the chance to talk to Kate Schellenbach after Luscious Jackson's show at the Embassy Rooms, and managed to ask her what was going on with the Dusty Trails project. Apparently the band is currently looking for a record deal, as well as for soundtrack work. Vivian's other project, with Russell Simins, has been signed to Grand Royal Records. Another interesting tidbit is that Dusty Trails have been playing live in NYC, mostly opening for Cibo Matto. So you New Yorkers might want to watch for possible future gigs in the area. For more details, go to the Dusty Trails Homepage.
  • (05/15/99)

  • Thanks to Ed's sneaky internet searching ways, we now have some information about Vivian's Dusty Trails project. The line-up goes as follows: Vivian Trimble, Josephine Wiggs, Kate Schellenbach and Gretchen Phillips. Perhaps a troubling detail for us Kostars fans is the inclusion of the words "formerly of Luscious Jackson AND Kostars" besides Vivian's name. You can go check the source of this information at The Gretchen Phillips Experience website.
  • (04/15/99)

  • Two things from Grand Royal Records:

*First off, the new Luscious Jackson album, which will bear the title "Electric Honey", will be released June 29 1999, with its first single "Lady Fingers" (remixes) out on June 8th. The radio airplay date for "Lady Fingers" is for May 17.

*And if that's not enough to make you happy, it has come to my attention that Vivian Trimble and Russell Simins (from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion I think, correct me otherwise) will be releasing an "Untitled Project" on October 5 1999.

  • (03/09/99)

  • From the "new and improved" Luscious Jackson Source: Kostars have recorded their song "Roll the Dice" which may actually be released one day. If you turn to the "From the Band" section of the LJ Source, you will also learn that Jill Cunniff is about to get married: congrats to the happy couple!
  • (02/25/99)

  • From Grand Royal Records: The new Luscious Jackson album, entitled "Electric Honey" for now, will be released sometime in May and a tour will quickly follow. Tony Visconti, Mickey P. and Tony Mangurian are among the producers.
  • (12/18/98)

  • Retrieved from SonicNet: "Ex-Breeders member Josephine Wiggs and ex-Luscious Jackson keyboardist Vivian Trimble are recording the first album from their group, Dusty Trails. No release date or label information is currently available."
  • (09/25/98)

  • It was somewhat confirmed by Jill Cunniff that Kostars are still alive (barely), but indefinately on hold due to more important Luscious Jackson commitments. In her own words (or so I was told), the band's existence is pretty much "up in the air as to the future". Vivian Trimble, who left Luscious Jackson this past April, is apparently working on a project called Dusty Trails among other things. No news or rumours as to when the new Luscious Jackson album will be released.
