Many people have the misconception that D/s (Dominance/ submission) and BDSM (bondage/discipline/sadism/masochism) are about abuse... they're not. It is abuse when a person physically or mentally hurts another person against that person's will. D/s and BDSM take place between two or more consenting adults who know what they are doing, doing it of their own free will and getting pleasure out of it. Nobody is forced to do anything they don't want to do. There are three words that mean a great deal in this lifestyle: Safe, Sane and Consensual. Ask any D/ser and they will tell you that these are words we live by.
I believe that anyone involved in this lifestyle should keep themselves educated... there are always new things to learn. Even if someone is not actively involved, if they are just curious what this life is all about, I think they too should learn so that they understand that although this is an alternative way of living, it's not a wrong way of living.
