Phyllis is a native Californian, having been born in Gliroy when it was a town of 2500 people. Her Grandfather on her Father's side of the family was also born there. The family home built by her Great Grandfather still stands in good repair across from the city museum.
She has two sons. Edward Peterman is a deputy sheriff in Santa Clara County, and Randall Peterman is a professor at Simon Frasier University in Burnaby, British Columbia. There are four grandchildren in her family.
The artist and her husband, John, have been members of the adult choir at Saint Andrew's Church, Saratoga since 1967. Phyllis has been active as a Stephen Minister and in Koinon. She and John also sing in the San Jose State University Chorale, which furnishes the vocal music for the San Jose Symphony.
Phyllis has a varied business background. After attending college, she worked for Pan American Airways when it was on Treasure Island, then at Salinas Valley Savings (now Great Western Bank), and eventually become a Realtor, designed and built speculation homes with her husband until her retirement in 1985.
She studied under William Cunningham in 1966 and later with Stella Leis both of Los Gatos, Jane Hofstetter, and Marie McDonnell Roberts. She often paints at the Jade Fon workshop in Asiomar and the Jane Burnham workshop in Yosemite, under the direction of nationally known artists. Locally, Phyllis is a member of Saratoga Contemporary Artists and her work is well received at art shows in our area.
The artist says: "Painting is a continual process of creating by seeing, feeling, and learning. I enjoy the challenge of painting different subjects and the use of many methods of putting paint on paper. When tackling an assignment, I treat it like a puzzle to solve: designing the total picture as to value, color, and content. I paint for the pleasure of it and am happy that my work entertains and gives others enjoyment too."
