Jeanette Winterson

"Winterson is like a magician who tells you exactly where to look while she performs her trick; if you pay attention, you'll see precisely what she's doing and enjoy it that much more."

-- The Nation

My favorite author at the moment. She has a way with words that is nothing short of pure magic. Her work is unique and poetic. From what little I have been able to dig up on her she is as spicy in her real life as the characters she creates!

Adrienne Rich

I don't even know where to begin here. This woman has written some of the most powerful works I've ever read. Her poetry sings and her essays on feminism and political location hit hard. While her poetry is amazing and definitely worth checking out don't miss out on her essays and the copies of speeches she has given at various events. They are powerful and motivating, definitely a must read for all young women.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

"Vonnegut is George Orwell, Dr. Caligari and Flash Gordon compunded into one writer...a zany but moral mad scientist."

-- Time

I absolutely adore this writer! Vonnegut spins the most amazing tales with his very unique approach to writing. He often creates worlds of impossibility, describing them with such intensity that we are left wondering if it might actually be true. If you are in the mood for something truly different you should definitely check out this author.

Gloria Anzaldua

Gloria Anzaldúa, a Chicana native of Texas, explores in prose, poetry and essays the condition of Chicanos in Anglo culture, women in Latino culture, and lesbians in a straight world. Anzaldúa is a powerful voice in contemporary literature, addressing cultural, sexual and spiritual identity, racism, feminism, and multilingual, multi-ethnic literacy.

Pablo Neruda

"And I thought: this is how poetry is born. It comes from invisible heights, it is secret and dark in its origins, solitary and fragrant, and like the river it will assimilate whatever falls in its current; it will seek a route between the mountains, and its crystalline song will ripple through the meadows" (on 50th birthday: July 12, 1954).

This man wrote hundreds upon hundreds of love poems for one woman. That kind of romance is a once in a lifetime deal. Not only did he write incredible romantic poems but he was also a political activist through his writing. He was even exiled from his native Chile for a time due to his strong political views.

Anne Rice

Yes, I am a huge fan of the "vampire" lady. Little did you know though, she has written many other truly horrifying and wonderful stories! Her series on the Mayfair witches are among my favorites. She has also written a few very erotic novels set her in her beloved New Orleans. I think if you have not yet experienced this author you need to give her a try. She'll leave you begging for more every time.

Letta Neely

Letta Neely is a new poet on the scene. She is known mainly in the poetry slam circles. There is very little about her in print right now since she is so new. I couldn't even find a picture of her to post here. So I am going to post a couple of her poems and an article done on her in Curve magazine to give you a little taste of her talents. Once you've had a taste I think you'll become hooked, just like me :) Enjoy!
