A few years ago my youth minister got the vision to take my youth group to Birmingham, AL for the 1996 Olympics. (Birmingham was the location for a number of the events) He had the idea to start a street ministry where we would do puppets, interpretive movement, etc. so beginning in October of 1995 he brought in people who would give us pointers on what we could do and how to do it. One night this guy named David Hicks comes in and gives two, half-hour classes on the basics of juggling. He tells this girl standing right next to me how well SHE is doing and never says a word about how well I was doing. Of course I WASN'T doing so great... But that just made me the desire to learn to juggle increase. I began to practice every moment I could spare. Meanwhile, David had no idea that anyone learned anything until one day my youth minister, Bob Moon, calls him up and tells David that one of the youth named Richard walked into his office one night, proceeds to balance on a basketball and juggle with a few different patterns (not bad for only a month or two of practice, huh?)
David called me that same day and set up a meeting time. David taught me everything he knew. Then we learned together. Now, I'm better than he is (hee, hee, hee). The thing is, David didn't think anything came out of those teaching sessions - but out of that he got a good friend and juggling partner. It's amazing how God can take what we do and have it affect other people in ways we could never think of happening.
