The DIY Achilles Has One Big Heel
There is one fatal flaw in the DIY world that keeps it from becoming what it truly could be. Laziness. The DIY is the world of armchair activists - where everyone has great ideas about changing the world, but no one ever follows them through.Everyone in the DIY world has an awesome idea for a zine. About 1/10th of those people actually make the zine. About 1/10th of the people who make a zine bother to make a 2nd issue. And about 1/10th of the people who make a 2nd issue, bother to do anything about the ideas & issues they bring up in their zines. Why is it that people who can sit and do repetitive boring math for hours on end - can't spend 2 hours a week to support alternative culture? And even if they're not at school - most of them just end up stoned in front of the tv - way to fight that revolution.
When are people gonna really living the big plans they have. So many times I've heard (myself included): "Man, one of these days..." or "when I'm done all this bullshit..." or my favourite: "when I get some money..." and then of course insert easily attainable goal after the statement. I have a big wake up message to these people: today is 'one of these days'. The bullshit never ends until you make it end. With that mentality you just get caught in the: work, sleep, repeat until dead program that a good friend once told me about. Unless you realize that THE TIME IS NOW then you're never gonna get anything done. Before you know it - you'll be 85 yrs old on your deathbed and you'll realize that you never set foot in Cuba or you never made your own music or whatever it is you wanna do. But hey, what do I know?
