Melissa's Preschool Page
Ok guys, I am gonna vent! I have patiently tried to make being a preschool teacher work now for close to 10 years. For you mothers who are trying to find a good daycare for your child, good luck to you... because most of the daycares push good teachers away with the lack of pay and benefits. And those who stay for the piddly amount of money they make get burned out on the lack of control they have in the classroom. The restrictions made by the Department of Human Services would make it hard for even the most patient person to do their job! SO you end up with people who can do no better than to work with kids. They settle for that because no one else will hire them.(not always the case, but the majority of the time it is) Sad but true. The daycare I worked in is the top of the line, and even it has it's problems. It worries me to think the situation these children spend their every waking moments in. I will not even get into todays additude that parents have toward daycare workers..... I personally have had all I can take! Daycare is the 2nd highest stressful job in the US. Number one? Air traffic controlers! If you find a good preschool teacher sing their praises because they are moving mountians to work in the atmostpheres that they are. Once again Good Luck!
10 things Teachers HATE to see preschoolers come to school wearing!
1. Overalls
2. Shoes with Round shoe strings. They WILL NOT stay tied!
3. Onesie outfits that snap at the crotch. (potty trained kids)
4. One piece outfits that buttons down the back.
5. One piece outfits that snap at the legs.
6. Shirt and pant sets with straps that fit through a loop on the shirt.
7. Headbands.
8. Leotards
9. To Small underwear
10. Belts when they are not needed.
Some basics Teachers wishes!
1. I wish that every parent was required to spend at least a week in a classroom before sending their child to daycare!
2. I wish that parents would put names on EVERYTHING! Including covers, jackets, and toys!
3. I wish I had a nickel for every shoe I tied!
4. I wish all parents knew how to double tie their childs shoe (Taking the loops of the tie and tieing them in a knot!) and do it every morning before sending their child off to see me!
5. I wish parents would realize that their child is NOT the only one I have in my class!
6. I wish preschool teachers were paid more for what they do.
7. I wish preschool teachers were recognized for the impact they have on tomorrows world.
8. I wish parents would not speak to me about their child in front of them.
9. I wish parents would realize that when I watching my class, It is hard to talk to them about Susie s misbehavior.
10. I wish parents would dress their child in easy to manage clothing so that the child can learn to be independent in such things as bathroom activities.
11. I wish that parents would let their child have some experience in doing things for themselves. (such as dressing) So they will be confident in learning new things instead of having the I can t attitude.
12. I wish all children had happy childhood s.
13. I Hope what I do reach at least ONE child.
Information about Biting
Biting is something that every parent probably deals with at one time or another while their preschooler is young. Whether your child is the biter or the bitee, it is a very upsetting thing. Even Daycare and preschool facilities sometime treat biting as a very serious thing. Here are some facts that might help you understand biting.
1. Biting is a very normal stage in toddlers. Usually done because they have no other way to communicate their wants or needs to who they are biting. As the child gets older and very defiantly in an older child who bites, they should be taught and encouraged to use their words to express their feelings and wants.
2. Reasons for biting vary. It can be struggle over a toy, aggression, boredom, or just wanting attention.
3. Vary rarely is there anything that can be done to prevent a bite. It happens so fast, it can even happen under the best caregivers watch. This is the reason that most daycares will discontinue care to a chronic biter. They simply cannot allow the other children to continue to get hurt on a daily basis. There are some facilities however who will work with the children to get them to stop their biting before taking such a step. When you are looking for a daycare, be sure to discuss with them their feelings on biting.
4. Some common things that are done with chronic biters are to let them chew on a carrot, a teething ring or piece of fruit. DO NOT bite the child back!
5. Vary rarely does biting cause diseases. Although possible, the chance is very slim if immediate first aid is given.
6. And lastly, it is a stage that your child will outgrow!
