SHAI'R 4
TASHREE:~
- The literal translation of this shai'r would be as follows:
See the gem in the necklace of a beautiful woman; how it is acclaimed, the masterpiece of the gem trader.
- This shai'r is true to the staement that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. In this case the poet is talking about the glitter of a gem that is in the necklace of the woman he loves. He says that it is not truly beautiful until worn around her neck. He goes on to say that the pride of the gem trader is ten folds when he sees it on the neck of this woman. This shai'r is an example of how Ghalib can say something so simple in such a profound manner. His delicate choice of words and metaphors makes it a delight to read.
