Those Childhood Days

As I sit here thinking about what to say
Across my mind, memories of childhood start to play.
I remember us playing hide and seek,
It was oh, so, tempting to steal a peek!

Remember playing with turtles in an old dish pan,
or the times we played trucks and cars in the sand?
I remember trying to shoot a target with your be-be gun,
At times I missed, shot at you and set you on the run!

You took me hunting for bullfrogs at the water hole,
And then we went fishing with a line and pole.
You'd say, "be real quiet!" but I liked to play...
I'd always end up scaring all the fish away!

I remember swinging from the branch of a big old tree,
One push from you...I'd be sailing in the air so free!
Then there was the bike you tried to teach me to ride,
You'd run along, holding on, trying hard to guide!

It was hard coaxing you to play house with me and the cat,
You'd agree, then go off to work..and never come back!
You'd rather play cowboys and Indians or trucks and cars,
Or pretend we were aliens from the planet Mars!

Those were some of the best years, don't you agree?
Just two silly kids, barefoot and fancy free!
I wouldn't trade these memories for silver or gold,
Why, there's just so many, they haven't begun to be told!

You gave me a lift to school in your old car,
I was glad to ride; school seemed so far!
So many times I was glad for one reason or another,
That you were there beside me, my faithful brother!

I remember the day you married your bride,
That night upon my pillow I cried and cried.
Those childhood days were gone forever,
But the memories gone?...oh, no, never!

I didn't realize then, the world hadn't ended,
just because your life with another was blended.
In exchange for giving my dear brother...
I gained the friendship and love of another!

Now, we're parents with children grown;
Some even have children of their own.
I just want to thank you for the years past,
The memories of those years will last and last!

The time is soon coming when we'll no longer part,
If the love of Jesus we have within our heart.
So be faithful to him, our true friend,
And we'll never have to part again!
