Happy Thanksgiving! Just the other day I was asked what I would be doing, since my sons were going to be spending Thanksgiving holiday with their dad. This person also made a joke (at least I hope they were trying to joke around) about how, with me being a Native American, that I probably didn't really celebrate Thanksgiving anyway.... That made me stop and really think about it. Yes, supposidly Thanksgiving is about sharing what you have and being thankful for all you have been given. But, in all honesty, the holiday season has gotten too "commercial". Too many people worring about outdoing each other..with the meals, decorations etc. Also, the original Thanksgiving was suppose to be the European peoples and Native Americans giving thanks for what they had...and for thanking the Native Americans for taking them in and showing them how to live in this land. Yet, it didn't take long for these same thankful European's to forget their thankfulness..and start the oppression that they were running from themselves. I have had many people tell me, "well it wasn't me, maybe an ancestor, but not me"...my question to them has always been.. "Ok, it may not have been you personally that started the oppression and attempted genocide of another race of peoples,...but what have you done PERSONALLY to help to stamp out the oppression and hatred for another??" "What have YOU done to help bridge the gap that has been created toward the Native Americans..or for that matter any race or religious group of peoples that have felt the hatred that ignorance brings?" This usually brings a blank stare.... HMMMMM.... So, tell me, what have YOU done? Have you helped in any way to bring about tollerance for those different then you? So, my answer to this person that asked me what I would be doing for Thanksgiving this year...Praying to Creator to help bring about a closer end to prejudice, an end to ignorance.. Please Pray with me!!
