Well...I wanted to feel smart. And my friend Kristyn gave me this book calling it "the best book in the whole wide world." I stared at the cover, and thought it looked interesting and nice enough. So, after Kristyn's perusal, I read the book titled "A Natural History Of The Senses." I really don't know where to start with this one. Every page was like a warehouse of fact, myth, fiction, humor, and enlightenment. I felt incredibly intelligent after each one (page, that is)...and the book is around 300 pages long!!! It is exactly what it says it is, a history of our senses, how each helps us, the history behind superstitions of senses, how the "old world" used their senses to delight themselves, our primitive instincts related to the senses and how they play a part in our everyday lives, even down to the works of our bodies. You learn things like "being touched makes people's outlook on life more pleasant" and some of the studies that proved this. It's quite an interesting piece of work, it really makes you think quite a bit. It's one that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to ANYONE (and I mean anyone), everyone will find something that they can enjoy in this...yeah, it's a slow read, but definitely worth the time to finish. Although Diane Ackerman can be a little too "I've done everything" and "I'm so great and knowledgable".....
