As I have said before, my father is Greek.
His family is from Karitsa, a village in Spartain the Pelleponesse region of Greece.
My grandfather Dimitri was the third son of Constantinos, the president of the village in 1912. A farmer by trade, Dimitri
was also an assessor who went about the village assessing property damage.
It is also believed that he sat in the local council for quite some time.
He had two older brothers called Panagiortis (Peter), who died in the war,
and Nicholas, who migrated to the United States. Dimitri had two
younger sisters called Liyeri (Lilly), and Georgia.
Dimitri was married to Angeliki with whom he
had three children, Constantina (Dina), Zaharoula (Roula), and Constantinos
(Con). A few months after Angeliki died of cancer, he married my
grandmother, Katerina (Ekaterina). She nursed his children, and brought
them up as her own, even after she gave birth to five of their own children
- Michael, Stella, Diamanti (Danny), Panagiortis (Peter), and Georgios
(George).
With the exception of Zaharoula and Stella, who
stayed in Greece, all of Dimitri's children migrated to Adelaide, South
Australia.
