As you know, a tragic event happened on April 20, 1999. The Colorado High School Massacre was the worst shooting ever. There were 14 teenagers (including the gun-men) and 1 teacher killed. My heart and prayers go out to the family of the victims, friends of the victims, and the surviviors. I ask you to keep all of them in your prayers. One of my friend's cousins goes to Columbine High School and sent me her letter describing it. It might be a little graphic for some. Here it is:
Hi, I am going to try to get through this. Yes, I do go to Columbine High School. And I am sure you all know what happened. But I had the 1st hand experience. And this is how it happened. I was going down to eat lunch, usually we eat outside, right where the gunman came in. But today we got lucky, there was an open table! It was covered in Soda, and we almost left it. But what a day to be lazy! We jusy sat down and delt with the mess. At 11:17 I looked at the clock to see how much lunch was left. The I turned my head and saw my Spanish teacher throw is lunch across the room. I just thought he tripped. Then I heard "Get DOWN! UNDER TABLES! PULL IN THE CHAIRS!!" I remembered the bad weather this morning, so I thought maybe it was a tornado, since it is that time of year here. Then I looked up and saw the grenade go off. Then more screaming "RUN RUN RUN JUST RUN" And the 500+ kids in the cafeteria ran screaming up the stairs. My friends and I held hands and ran too. We heard the gunmen following us shooting at those who were the last up the stairs. We were ripped apart, Carolyn got lost in the crowd, Ann Marie was tripped and trampled under running kids. I just ran and ran. We all found eachother across the street, after running through the street in front of cars. All except Carolyn. We ran and hid behind the trees. Then made our way to Sarah's house. It ended there for me. But not for others. What hurts me most is that there were bomb threats at my school this morning, but they were ignored. If they hadn't been I would still have Jenny, Renee, and Sarah (a different one). Those are all that I know that are confirmed dead. But there have been AT LEAST 15 confirmed deaths. And I know many of the teachers who were shot. One of my friends, Greg, was trapped in a science class room with a teacher who was shot twice in the arm. The boys thought fast and used there shirts to stop the bleeding. I also know many people who got trapped in classes and were freed by the SWAT team. All the while having guns on them. They waded through the water from the sprinkler systems, that went off because of the flares, pipe bombs, and grenades, where all my lunch stuff and backpack were left abandoned in the flee up the stairs. Those people evacuated that way had to walk over dead bodies. I thank the Lord for my fortunate escape. Please pass this on to all you know. Love, Christina
