This is theSchool of Architecture at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, its a new building only five years old. We were the first architecture freshmen class to bless the new halls of this building in 1993. The UH School of Architecture program is a really grueling one...it accepts only 50 students every year out of 200 applications. If you're one of the lucky ones to get in, after a couple of years you might feel like my friend, Ivan Sakamoto, who at one time said..."I am only 21 years old, yet I feel that I have been awake an equilavent number of hours to that of a sixty year old man." Life in architecture consist of days of design...design..design till we can't design no more, then we bust a** to create magnificent presentation boards and models that are used a total of 3 or 4 hours being drilled by jurors who can make you feel so good about your design you worked on for hundreds of hours or feel sh-tty about the thing cause with all the hundreds of hours you spent designing you still didn't get your design concept through. |

So why do we do it...we love the pain of getting something we created and sharing it with other people. We love buildings, landscaping, houses, anything architectural, and we enjoy being in them. We enjoy creating models and taking pride in our craftmanship (sometimes! if you didn't cut yourself or glue the wrong piece in the wrong place). We're artistic lunatic people who love what we do and would spend the five hard years to get to do it. However, I would never give up my five architecture school years of memories...of stressing times... all nighters, midterms and finals hell...of fun times...goofing around, cook outs, sushi nights, cruising and talking stories with friends and faculty. I've gained several very important things in my life from going to the University of Hawaii School of Architecture, one, my enhanced love for architecture, two, my second family made up of friends that have been with me through all the ordeals in and out of school...life long friends that I miss dearly, three, the knowledge of my tolerance of lack of sleep and four, how bullsh*t my way through a presentation and still look good! 8) School Activities SANDCASTLE ESQUISSE The School of Architecture makes their annual trek to Kailua Beach Park to participate in the traditional "Sandcastle Esquisse." The event planned to a theme features creations of teams of 5 from both student and architectural professionals. Students are graded in the sand but judges and in the end 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes are given out. Creations are then opened to the public to enjoy. (We then have fun in the sun, eat, play volleyball, football, dump people in the water ..including dean and faculty...or go home and sleep again!) TREAT STREET Treat Street is an annual community service project in conjunction with the Bishop Museum to promtoe a safe environment on Halloween for the children of the area. Building facades are created to a theme by teams of 6 architecture students from various levels. (All and all, its cutting wood, lifting wood, painting wood, pounding nails into WOOD, painting each other and having fun!) |
