The night is cool and
cloudy and a mist fills the darkness as the men in blue quietly move about
while patrolling deep nights.
There is little movement in the
city and the radio is silent, the streets are dimly lit.
Over against an old building a
cat slowly and quietly slips out of sight.
In the alley theres a dog barking
at a shadow cast by a cloud floating across the full moon.
It's close to mid-night, the tour
of duty will continue until the sun breaks over the eastern horizon.
The shops are closed and most of
the people are home asleep safely awaiting the next day.
Then a frantic voice rings out
over the radio, " Officer needs assistance...shots fired...shots fired!!!"
All at once the night is filled
with lights and sirens, anticipation and
fear, fear that another officer
has been injured or killed.
Oh Lord be with him until we can
get to him!
God don't let him be down.
Come on... come on...why won't
this thing go faster?
Come on man talk to us!!!
Hang on we're getting close..we're
almost there!!!
Dispatch we're out and we have
one down!!!
Dispatch send ambulance suspect
down!!!
After several hours the scene is
cleared, the light and sirens are gone.
The officer involved goes home
to find his wife and children asleep.
They have no idea how close
they came to getting that late night knock on the door.
He can't rest or calm down, he
relives the nightmare every time he closes him eyes.
He knows he did what had to be
done but will they see it that way as they sit in their safe offices.
They give up their family time
and sometimes their lives for the shield.
At least this time there will be
no lowered flags, no taps no badges shrouded in black because last night
Gabriel reported for duty as his partner.
