The Traditon of St. Valentines Day

There are many opinions on how Valentines Day began. Some experts say it began from St. Velentine - a Roman-who was martyred (KIlled) for refusing to give up his beleifs in Christianity. He died on February 14. 269 A.D. the same day that was used for love lotteries. The legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note to the jaliers daughter who had become his friend, and signed it "From your Valentine."

Another story says that St. Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of emperor Claudius who had St. Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. over 200 years after his death Pope Gelasisus set aside Feb 14th to honor St. Valentine. February 14th began to be the date set aside for exchanging love messages and St Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.

Love Yummies Heart-Shaped Cupcakes

These are easy to make. Place paper baking cups in a muffin-tin. Put a marble or smallball of foil in each cup between paper liner and pan. This makes heart-shape mold in which to cook cupcakes. Pour in cake batter and bake according to directions. Don't fill cups too full or you will lose the heart shaped effect of the cupcake.

Valentine Cookie Bouquet

Great for a gift or a centerpiece. Use a clean flowerpot of empty can. Paint red or cover with Valentine paper. Glue eyelet lace or your favorite trimmming around top or bottom of can. Purchase 2-dozen flower-shaped cookies with holes in the center, 1 to2 dozen large heart shaped red gumdrops, 1 to 2 dozen bamboo skewers and 2 3 inch thick pieces of Styrofoam to fit in can. Glue styrofoam to inside bottom of can. To make flowers, push a skewer through center of one of the gumdrops through center of a cookie and then another gumdrop. Push cookies and gumdrops together sandwich-style on end of skewer. Insert other end of skewwer into styrofoam inside can. Tie a red bow under the cookie. Cut skewers dso flowers will be different heights. By varying colors of gum drops or bows you can add a little variety to your bouquet.

Super Kiss

Melt 1/4 cup margarine or butter in large saucepan over low heat. Add 1 (10 oz.) pkg. marshmallows (about 50) or 4 cups miniature marshmallows and stir untill completely melted. Stirring constantly, cook 3 minutes longer over low heat. Remove from heat. Add 5 cups rice cereal or chocolate rice cereal and stir until well-coated. Cool slightly but not compleletely. Butter your fingers. Press warm mixture intolrge,buttered funnels. When cool, unmold from funnel and wrap in plastic or tin foil to look like a giant hershey type kiss. Makes 2 to 4 large Kisses.
