paul's story
Hi,
I am Paul, Herb to my internet friends.
On May 4, 1979... me and three buddies had planned on going
4 wheeling.
That day we had been sitting around drinking beer and having
a party.
We were all married and our wives tried to talk us out of going
because we had been drinking.
We drove to Huntsville, Texas from Conroe, Texas which is only
about 36 miles.
We hit about every club in Huntsville that we could and had
a few beers in each club.
We also had about a case on ice in the vehicle.
At about 11 pm we decided it was time to go 4 wheelin.
At this time we headed back to Conroe.
About 8 miles from Conroe, the driver of the vehicle that I
was riding in decided to horse around and he jerked the wheel of the jeep
and lost control.
At 70 miles per hour the jeep tipped over on its right side
(my side) and we went sliding (for about 100 yards).
We slid off the side of the freeway, and started flipping...
We flipped from corner to corner and end to end at least 7 times.
Sometime during the flipping we were both thrown from the vehicle...
I THINK?...
(we weren't in the jeep when help arrived, we were out on the
ground)
When our other two friends passed us... they didn't realize
it was us until they had gotten a few miles down the road...
when they realized that it was us they turned around and came
back.
A truck driver stopped and radioed for help.
The ambulance arrived and they said that we would never make
it.
One of the paramedics passed me up for dead...
he was gonna go help the other paramedic work on the person
who had been driving.
one of my friends that wasn't in the accident told him "NO....
we got him out of the road,
he was wandering around in the middle of the road,
he is alive.
You are gonna stay here and help him!"
The paramedic who thought I was dead...
was my ex father-in-law...
he didn't even recognize who I was.
They took us to Conroe (a small town that didn't have the facilities
to provide the care that we needed).
We were life-flighted to Houston to Herman Hospital.
I didn't have any insurance but I was a veteran so they
sent me to the VA Hospital in Houston.
My alcohol level was so high that they could not do anything
until it came down...
I laid there another 7 hours and then they were finally
able to perform surgery.
Throughout the whole ordeal... I was conscious.
I was in intensive care for 2 weeks.
I was in the hospital for 2 1/2 months.
Over the next year I went through 3 other surgeries.
I had a wife and a 3 month old baby girl and was unable to care
for them as a result because I could not work for about another 6 months.
I tried to go back to work ... but I couldn't.
We lost everything we had.
We also couldn't get any type of government help for some reason.
BUT
thanks to
the Will of God,
friends, and family
I am here today to tell this story.

Hi,
I'm Bonnie, Tatacake to my internet friends.
This is a story of a drunk driver who drove his truck into my
trailer house.
On February 8, 1996 at 10:15 pm, me, my ex-husband, my nephew
and my two children were sitting in our house minding our own business.
All of a sudden I heard a crash and then another crash at the
top of the hill.
Thinking that someone had crashed into my nephew's pickup truck...
I went to the door to look out the window and see what had happened.
When I look out the window there was a truck about 10 feet away,
doing about 70 miles per hour, heading right at me...
My ex said... "what's up Bonnie?"
I did not have time to answer him.
I said "Oh God!"
closed my eyes and took a step back towards the kitchen...
my ex was standing on the other side of the door and he took
a step into the living room.
He said that as the truck came by him he had to push off of
it to get out of the way.
When I opened my eyes I was somehow at the back door of the
trailer house on the other side of the kitchen... with no scratches whatsoever...
Thank God!!!
The noise was deafening and sounded like the truck was fixin
to blow up.
I could not get to anyone else because the truck was sitting
between the kitchen and the rest of the trailer.
I was screaming for someone to turn the truck off.
My daughter was screaming and I could not get to her.
I was worried that she was bleeding to death because there was
a 4' x 5' mirror in the room that she was in.
My ex did not know that I had made it out of the way and thought
that I was under the truck dead.
I will never forget the sound of his voice as he yelled out
my name.
The driver of the truck was passed out and the accelerator was
stuck wide open.
The couch that my children had been sitting on 5 minutes before
this happened was wrapped around a cabinet and the refrigerator.
The front left fender of the truck was embedded into the armchair
of the couch that my nephew was sitting in.
A 5' x 6' mirror was broken over my ex's back.
The trailer house was no longer sitting on its blocks...
it was moved over 4 feet from its original position.
I finally was able to get out the back door of the kitchen and
get to my children through the other back door.
Thankfully they were ok.
All of the rooms in the trailer house were destroyed except
for the room that my children were in...
everything in that room was in place except for one shelf
that had fallen off of the wall.
I believe the room was protected because my son had made his
own border around the top of the room with sayings about God & Jesus
that he had either written up or drawn.
..........
Let's back up a little bit...
..........
Right before all of this happened my kids had been sitting on
the couch.
I home schooled them so they were not yet in bed...
I usually would let them watch coach.
but for some reason that nite I told them it was time for bed.
My son asked if he could watch coach ...
I said no...
He started to pester me about it and
I said no arguing with me
give me kisses and hugs and ya'll get in bed.
If I had let them stay up to watch TV...
or if we had stood there talking about it
we would not be here today.
Thus...
another blessing from the Lord!!
.......
My ex got the driver of the truck out and the driver said ....
"Lets not make no big deal out of this coz I don't have any
insurance"
.......
We received a small restitution ...
The driver was put on probation for a year,
served a few days in jail,
& some community service work.
BUT
it took him over a year to pay us,
he also violated his probation.
He is also still out there drinking and driving.
..........
This driver was only drinking at a bar 3 miles from home
he was only 2 blocks from home when he ran through our house.
sooooo...
.......
if you think....
.......
I can make it
I don't have far to go
I'm not that drunk
........
and if you see someone who is drunk...
Please
.......
If someone had of stopped this driver before he left the bar...
my family would not have lost their home and almost everything
we had.
Bonnie's Pictures
These are not bloody...
just pictures of the truck in the house and pictures of the damage
to the house....
I still have to put the pictures on here...
when they are loaded I will take this line off !
