Stephen King
STEPHEN KING is probably my favorite writer (and I'm an English major, so I'm not supposed to think he's any good), but, for those of you who sneer at his ability as a writer, who among you can begin to understand an e. e. cummings poem, let alone interpret it and apply its meaning to a novel's plot: "the dress was a suspicious madder, importing the cruelty of roses."
"The beauty of religious mania is that it has the power to explain everything. Once God (or Satan) is accepted as the first cause of everything which happens in the mortal world, nothing is left to chance...logic can be happily tossed out the window."
Born: September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine
I also like his movies a lot, too, or at least the ones he has some control over. "STAND BY ME" (above) was a great story and a great movie.
From THE DARK TOWER IV - WIZARD AND GLASS: "Twenty minutes later, as the bloated orange moon struggled above the buildings of the town like a pregnant woman climbing a steep hill..." Similes don't get much better than that.
STEPHEN KING is a member of
"THE ROCK BOTTOM REMAINDERS."
I heard recently (late 1999) that King has said he does not think he will ever write again because of a writer's block he acquired when he was hit by a van last year. I certainly hope that this is not the case.
[April 2002: It wasn't.]
"Some birds aren't meant to be caged, their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up, does rejoice. I guess I just miss my friend."
