Mr. Dolphus Raymond went to the trial on a thoroughbred, sitting with the blacks during lunch. He drank from a brown paper bag which everyone thought was filled with whiskey, but it really wasn't. He lives by himself near the county line, married to a colored woman with mixed children. Mr. Raymond owns all one side of the riverbank, inheriting it from a really old family. Legend had it that he never got over his wedding. He was suppose to marry a Spencer lady, but she killed herself after the wedding rehearsal. He sent two of his children up north to escape the injustices of the area. He smelled of leather, horses, and cottonseed. |
