Pooh and Co.
Pooh and all his friends...
Who appears in the stories?
Christopher Robin and his toys. Christopher Robin is a young English lad whose animals get into all
sorts of scrapes in the Hundred Acre Wood, which is where they live.
They are:
Winnie-The-Pooh
Stout Bear, of little brain, also goes under the name Edward. And sometimes under the name Mr
Sanders. Enjoys hunny and hums. Principal Protagonist.
Piglet
Small and timid creature, with a penchant for haycorns and bright colours (e.g. Christopher Robin's
red braces). Pooh's best friend. Fallen on once by Pooh.
Rabbit
Beaurocrat of the forest. Enjoys organising and not getting anything done. Probably modelled on the
British Civil Service. Always seems to have a large and fulsome larder. Overfed Pooh on one
occasion, and was forced to use the back door for a whole week. Has large numbers of Friends and
Relations, of whom more later.
Owl
Technically the wisest of the forest dwellers, but sometimes has difficulty spelling Tuesday (or is it
Tyoosdey?). Lives in a tree, and is given to flying around a bit. Has a touch of the kleptomaniac
about him, when it comes to tails.
Eeyore
Depressed donkey, who seems to think that the world is against him. Always comes across as
intelligent, but quiet. Doesn't like being assaulted, swimming, or broken thistles. Does like thistles,
though; and pots and burst balloons. Current (and only) resident of the House at Pooh Corner.
Kanga
Only overtly female inhabitant of the forest. Arrived with Roo after about five chapters of the first
book. The strange new creatures were greeted with anger and scepticism to start with (hardly
surprising: I would do the same if a couple of Australians turned up in my forest). Other residents
tried to get rid of them, redefining the meaning of the word aha in the process. They assimilate
quickly, and Kanga becomes the overriding maternal presence.
Roo
Apparently Kanga's progeny. Small and enthusiastic, but not given the full free reign because of
Kanga's protective instincts. Was kidnapped, and replaced by Piglet (who said "aha"). Enjoys
eating, but has a distinct distaste for malt extract (medicine). Good friends with Tigger, who he also
admires greatly. Hobbies include throwing pine-cones.
Tigger
Newest arrival in the forest. Has exceptionally fussy eating habits (doesn't like hunny, haycorns or
thistles; does enjoy malt extract, though). Bounces lots, much to the dismay and distress of some of
the more temperate residents. Multi-talented - can climb trees; fly; swim; find his way home in the
fog; play poohsticks (and poohdonkeys). Roo's friend and mentor, and also principal
co-pine-cone-thrower.
Small
One of Rabbit's many friends and relations. Small is short for Very Small Beetle. Managed to get
lost in a Heffalump trap.
Alexander Beetle
Not John Lennon's stand-in on the new single, but another of Rabbit's insubstantial friends or
relations.
Various Monsters
Heffalumps, Woozles, Backsons (spotted or herbaceous) and Jagulars have, in fact, never been
seen, and are just the figments of the deluded imaginations of some of the more insecure residents.
I
Appears rarely (and only in Winnie-the-Pooh ). Seems to think he is telling Christopher Robin the
stories. Personally, I think he has an A A Milne complex.
Where do all these characters live? Take the tour of the woods and find out.
