Jayme and I trembled as Cam found us in the
bushes. He sneered and grabbed us, dragging us back to the shack.
Jayme let out a little whimper as he threw her down on the floor.
He kicked her again, for good measure, and then turned to me. "So,
you decided to be a hero, did you? Well, no one will be able to save
you now. You're stuck baby! Face it!"
As much as I knew that I shouldn't sass him, I bit
back "You're not as smart as you think Cam! There are people who
already know we're missing, and you can bet they'll find us, it's only
a matter of time."
He glared at me and walked closer. "Did I
just hear you talk back to me? So, you think you're smart and
tough, is that it? We'll see about that!" He smacked me across
the face again. "Stand up and fight if you think you're so tough!
DO IT!"
Reluctantly I stood up, and ducked as his fist came
flying at me again. The only good think about him being on drugs
was the fact that his eye-hand co-ordination wasn't quite up to par, so
that gave me a bit of an advantage. I struggled to keep out of the
way. "Run Jayme!" I yelled at her. I tossed Nick's cell
phone to her as she stood up shakily. "Use the that to your advantage,
and cause a little Kaos with it as soon as you can!" (for those
of you who didn't catch that, Kaos is one of Nick's nicknames.) Jayme's
eyes lit up as she understood my code, and she limped as quickly as she
could out the door, and then I could hear her making her way through the
bushes. When it finally registered to Cam what was happening, he
tried to go after Jayme, but this time I was too quick for him. Raising
my leg, I kicked him as hard as I could in the back, and watched him crumple
to the floor. He groaned and tried to stand, but again I kicked him,
this time in the stomach. With the wind knocked out of him, he wasn't
so quick to respond, so I looked around for something to delay him even
further. My eyes came to rest on a good sized board in the corner
of the shack, and I ran over, picked it up and hit him over the head.
Finally, he was unconscious. I dropped the board and ran swiftly
outside, my face throbbing where he'd hit me earlier. I knew I'd
have a gorgeous purple bruise in a few minutes.
"Jayme!" I screamed once I got outside. I
heard her faintly answer me. I hurried in that direction, praying
I'd find her before Cam woke up. For once that day, someone was on
our side. I found Jayme in a couple of minutes, and we both clung
together as we made our way toward the freeway. Once we got there,
we held out our thumbs and hoped for the best.
Well, we hadn't waited for very long when someone
stopped for us. She was a friendly old lady, and when we told her
where we need to go, she kindly said she'd take us there. In the
meantime, I phoned Nick again and let him know we were ok...at least, I
was.
"Nick," I whispered into the phone, "I think you
should call an ambulance and have them wait there for us. I think
Cam beat Jayme up worse than she's letting on." I looked over at
Jayme and watched her wince with pain as she shifted in her seat.
Blood was still trickling down from her nose, and she had a nasty gash
over her eye, plus she had been limping quite severely.
"Absolutely, I'm so glad you're safe. I'll
make sure the paramedics come right away."
I hung up and breathed a sigh of relief. It
looked like everything was going to be all right.
Just as that thought ran through my head, Jayme
started going into convulsions. I panicked and called to the lady
driving "My friend is convulsing! What should I do?!"
Hurriedly, she answered, "Lay her down, but don't
try to restrain her. Try to keep her from hurting herself, but be
careful that she doesn't hurt you, ok? I'm going to take a detour
to the hospital, you just hold on."
I nodded and questioned her. "How do you know
this stuff?"
She smiled and responded, "Honey, it's your lucky
day. I used to be a nurse."
In no time at all, we reached the hospital.
The lady (who's name I found out was Helen), told me to run into the ER
doors and ask that a stretcher be brought out. I did so, and led
the doctors to Helen's car, where Jayme was still convulsing in the backseat.
They loaded her onto the stretcher, and rushed her into the hospital.
By then I was crying so hard I could hardly see, so Helen led me into the
ER. She insisted I get checked out too, so they brought me into a
examination room, and a doctor looked me over. "You seem fine miss,
except for the two bruises on your face, but those should disappear in
a couple of days. Do you know who did this to you?" The doctor
looked at me with a serious look on his face.
Fresh tears gathered in my eyes. "Yes sir,
I do. His name is Cameron Stills. He's my ex- boyfriend, and
he kidnapped both Jayme and I and took us to a shack in some forest off
the freeway, not too far from here. He's still there, I knocked him
unconscious and Jayme and I ran off."
He nodded. "I'll inform the police.
In the meantime, do you have anyone you can call to come here and wait
with you?"
"Yes sir, I do."
"Alright, I'll show you to a phone you can use."
Helen was waiting for me outside the exam room.
"You ok?" she inquired. I nodded and told her I was going to use
the phone. "Will you wait here for any more news about Jayme?"
She assured me she would, and I went to use the phone.
As Nick picked up the phone, I could hear other
people in the background. Apparently his family was back. "Nick,
it's Sam again. We're at a hospital, Jayme went into convulsions
on the way back to your place, so the woman who picked us up brought us
to the hospital. Can you all come over here?"
He said they'd be right over, and I gave him the
name of the hospital we were at. I hung up the phone and found my
way back to Helen. "Any news on Jayme yet?" I ask her. She
shook her head, and led me to a chair. We both sat down, and she
handed me a paper cup filled with water. I thanked her, and nervously
sipped the water as I waited for news on Jayme. Finally, a doctor
came out of the trauma room and walked over to us. We both stood
as the doctor began to speak.
"Your friend appears to have received quite a hard
blow to her head, and she has a concussion. Her ankle is sprained,
but it's not serious. If you'd like, you can go in and see her now."
Helen nudged me forward. "I'll stay here and
wait for your boyfriend and his family."
I made sure she knew what Nick looked like, so she'd
be able to spot him easily. I headed over to the trauma room to see
Jayme.
She looked so helpless lying there on the table.
She was awake, though, so I went over to talk to her.
"Hey Sam, bet I scared ya back there, eh?"
"Damn straight you did! Where do you get off?!"
She smiled at me. "Sorry. I was pretty
scared myself. What did the doctor tell you about me? What
about you, are you ok?"
"Oh yeah, I'm ok. About you though, the doctor
said you had a concussion and a sprained ankle. When did Cam hit
you, Jayms?"
Her face scrunched up as she tried to remember.
"I don't remember...I think I may have blacked out at one point, but I'm
not sure."
Just then, the doctor came back in and told us,
"We need to move Jayme to another room, so I'll have to ask you to leave
for now. I'll come and tell you as soon as she's moved so that you
can visit her more."
I thanked the doctor and said goodbye to Jayme.
As I went back to where Helen was sitting, I saw Nick and his family coming
in. I rushed over and threw my arms around him. "I'm so glad
you're ok!" he said.
I looked at him with tears in my eyes. "I'm
so glad to see you, because I honestly didn't think I would ever again."
