Chapter 28

"Ok guys, I'll see you all in a few days."  I turned to Nick with a wide smile on my face.  "And I'll see you in 48 hours, sweetie."  Nick leaned in and kissed me with such fervour, it was hard to believe we'd only be apart for a couple of days.  It seemed like everything was about to change, and it felt so...odd.  Not bad, just like I was living out my dream (which I was), but I'd never felt so happy and completely fulfilled before.  I gripped my carry on bag as I climbed onto the plane and found my seat.  The plan was that I was going to go back to Winnipeg and start getting things finalized for the wedding, then Nick would come down with his family less than two days later and help finish everything.  After that, the rest of our ‘crew' would arrive, and the day of the wedding would be here.  I sighed as I played with the ring on my finger, thinking that in less than a week, I would be married.  ‘Mrs Nick Carter' I thought to myself.  I turned to wave to the people standing outside as the plane revved it's engine and began to take off.  When I turned back to the book I was reading, a strange sensation swept through my belly, and immediately I knew it wasn't just airsickness.

    ***On the other plane***

"Wow, married, dude.  That means that you'll have to be like, responsible."  Brian chuckled as Nick gave him a look.  "Sorry man, you know I have to bug you a little bit about it."  He paused to take a sip of his drink.  "So, do you guys want to have kids?"

Nick took a bite of his steak and chewed thoughtfully.  "Yeah, but not right away I don't think.  I mean, we'll take a bit of time to just enjoy married life.  Kids'll come in a couple of years probably."

Kevin leaned over from his seat across the aisle.  "You nervous about the wedding, Nick?"

"Nah, not really.  I think Sam is, but just because she's worried that not everything's gonna get done on time, y'know?  She likes to worry."  He smiled to himself and shivers ran down his spine as he thought of the upcoming wedding, and the last night in the hotel.  ‘A night of surprises' he thought.

"Did you get her a gift yet?" Howie broke into Nick's quiet thoughts.

"Huh?" he looked startled.  "A gift?  You mean I need to get her a gift?"

"Well, yeah man.  I mean, not something big, but just a little something.  She's probably got yours all wrapped up and ready to go by now."

"Wow.  I didn't know about that.  I wonder what I should get her?"

"I'm thinking Victoria's Secret is good..."  AJ couldn't control the smile creeping across his face.  Nick looked over at him and raised his eyebrow, signalling for him to shut up.  AJ got the message, mumbled ‘sorry' and turned back to his magazine.

Brian laughed.  "Besides, she'd probably like something for herself, moron."  He thought for a second.  "Does she like animals?"

Nick tapped his fork against his plate as he tried to remember.  "Oh, yeah!  She loves cats.  Do you think I should get her a kitten?"

"Sure man, why not?  She'll think you're so ‘thoughtful' and ‘charming'.  Chicks love that.  Besides, it'll give you guys practice for when you have kids."  Brian sat back with a satisfied look on his face.

"What is it with you and having kids Bri?  What makes you think we want them so bad?"

Brian held up his hands in a surrendering gesture.  "Take it easy!  I just thought-"

"Well, stop it.  I don't need any more pressure right now."

"Sorry."  Looking defeated, Brian turned to ask Howie if he wanted to play cards.

Nick sighed and leaned his head back.  He'd be glad when the wedding was over, and everything was back to normal.

    ***At the Winnipeg International Airport***

"Mom, you're smothering me!"  My mother unwrapped her arms from my shoulders and stood back to look at me.

"I'm sorry sweetie, I just missed you so much!  I'm so excited for this wedding, too.  And you look so happy!  I'm glad your life is finally going the way you want it to."

‘Maybe less than you think' I said to myself as we made our way over to the conveyor belt to get my luggage.  I rubbed my stomach unconsciously as I reached down and grabbed one of my suitcases.  My mom noticed this and asked, "Are you hungry dear?  Didn't they feed you on the plane?"

I noticed what I was doing and quickly dropped my hand to my side.  "Um, yeah, I'm a bit hungry.  But I can wait until we get home for one of your delicious home cooked meals."

She pinched my cheek and smiled widely at me.  "You're such a sweet girl, and you suck up so well too!"

"Gee, thanks mom.  By the way, has Jayme gotten home yet?"

Shifting the bag that was under her arm, she grunted and replied, "Yes, I believe she has.  Just last night actually."

"Good.  Um, do you think you might, uh, be able to drop me off there on the way home?  I know I just got back and everything, but I really need to talk to her.  It's pretty important."

A disappointed look crossed her face.  "Well, sure honey, we could do that.  Is it about the wedding?"

    "You could say that."

***Later on, at Jayme's house***

Jayme threw me a pillow and we flopped down across her bed.  "So, what's up?  I saw you just a couple of days ago, what could have possibly happened in that length of time?"

"More than you think, Jayms."  I fiddled with the pillow uneasily, until Jayme poked me in the side and demanded I tell her what was going on.

"Ok ok.  You know how I told you that Nick and I hadn't done anything really, y'know, physical yet?"  She nodded.  "Well, last night we were discussing that, and at first we decided that we'd wait to do anything like that until after the wedding, but eventually one thing led to another and-"

"You didn't!"  Jayme sat bolt upright.

    I nodded sheepishly.  "We did."

She lay back down and exhaled loudly.  "Wow."

    "That's not all."

Slowly, she turned to me and sat up again.  "What do you mean, that's not all?"

I bit my lip and unintentionally rubbed my belly again.  "I, um.  I think I might be, um.  I think I might be pregnant."

Jayme opened her eyes wide and stared at me.  Then she lowered her eyebrows and asked, "But how can you tell?  If it just happened last night, you have no way of telling so soon afterwards."

"Well, I don't know.  I mean, I don't know for sure.  But I just have this feeling that I am."

We sat in silence for a minute or two.  Then Jayme asked, "What does Nick think?"

I shook my head.  "I haven't said anything yet.  I really only realized it when I was on the plane, and by then it was too late to talk to him.  I think I'll wait until he flies up the day after tomorrow."

"When will you be able to tell for sure?"

"Probably not for another couple of weeks.  I don't think the doctors can tell until you're a few weeks along."

Jayme sighed and lay back again.  "Well, I guess my next question is, are you excited?  I mean, I know you guys probably hadn't planned on this happening for a while, but now that it may have, what do you think?"

"I honestly don't know, Jayms.  I mean, I'm ecstatic with the idea of carrying Nick's baby, but I don't know how it'll all work.  I mean, we're not even married yet, this is bound to put extra strain on our relationship.  I guess we should have been more careful."  I looked down at my hands as tears began to roll down my cheeks.

"Hey, it's ok.  I didn't mean to upset you, Sam.  Yeah, maybe you should have been more careful, but what's done is done.  And besides, you don't even know for sure that you arepregnant.  Let's just put off panicking until we're positive, ok?"

    I sniffled.  "Ok.  Thanks Jayme."

"Hey, what are friends for?  You know I love ya."

    ***Back in Florida***

Nick stared at the wide variety of kittens the pet store had.  How was he supposed to know which one he should get?

Brian nudged him and he went over to the next window to see what Brian was staring at.  Inside, there was a tiny little kitten, just big enough to fit in the palm of his hand.  It was orange and white striped, with fluffy fur and huge paws.  "That's the one.  She'll love it."

"You think so?"  Nick was still unsure about this.  I mean, what kind of a wedding present was a kitten?  Still, the other guys had a little more insight into this subject, what with older brothers and sisters and all, so they must know what they're talking about.

"Can I help you gentlemen with anything?"  the salesgirl broke into the boys' thoughts.

Nick nodded toward the orange striped kitten.  "I'd like that one.  Could you tell me how much it'll be?"

The girl peered at the kitten and quoted the price.  Nick's eyes bugged out of his head, but he just nodded, composed himself and asked the girl if she could help them get the necessary things for the new addition to his family.

"I sure hope Sam likes it" he thought.

**The next day, back at the airport***

    "Nick!"

You'd think we hadn't seen each other in 2 years, instead of only 2 days.  We were so excited to see each other, we forgot about everyone else around us.  Kevin brushed past us and hissed, "Yo, Romeo, Juliet, can it.  You're making a scene, and we're gonna get recognized."

Wrapping me in a tight embrace, Nick hissed back, "So what Kev?  Tomorrow is going to be the happiest day of my life, and right now I'm with my wonderful woman.  Let us get recognized, I don't care!"

Instead of getting hotel rooms for everyone to stay in, we were spreading everyone out among a few houses.  Nick, Brian, Kevin, AJ and Howie were staying at Jayme's; Lindy, Kayla, Denise and Jane were staying at my uncle Dan's; and the rest of the Carter clan, including BJ, Leslie, Angel, Aaron and Mr. Carter, were staying at our house.  We hoped this would call less attention to the Boys' and the fact that they were staying in the city.

After we got everyone's stuff to the appropriate house, we just decided to ‘chill out' for a while at our place.  Pulling Nick away from everyone else, I whispered,  "I've got something important to tell you."

    "What is it?"

Noticing my cousins advancing in our direction, I pulled Nick down to the basement.  He looked at me strangely and said, "Well, what is it?"

Pacing around until I worked up my nerve, I finally stopped in front of him, looked him square in the eyes, and said it.

"I think I might be pregnant."
