More LGBTQ Symbols
A GREAT site with these symbols (& more) with a small background/history
of each symbol next to it's picture (VERY educational).

AIDS Awareness Ribbon; The red ribbon has been used for HIV/AIDS Awareness, which can be seen on clothing & various accessories as a symbol of that individual's commitment to fighting against HIV/AIDS.

Astrological Gender Symbols which came from the ancient Romans.
These symbols represent Lesbian, Gay, Straight, Bisexual & Transgender Individuals.

The Mercury Astrological Sign is another symbol of transgender people. The crescent moon at the top represents their masculine aspect and the cross at the bottom represents their feminine self. The ring represents the individual, with the male and the female balanced at either side.

Gay Pride Flag; The first flag had eight stripes: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for spirit. When the designer went to mass produce the flag some changes had to be made. Pink and turquoise were removed and royal blue replaced indigo, leaving the flag with six colors.

The Lamdba was chosen as a gay symbol in 1970 by the New York Gay Activists Alliance & in 1974 by the Gay Right Congress in Scotland who adopted this symbol as theirs also. It was to symbolize the growing movement of the gay liberation. Many today see it as a Gay & Lesbian Rights symbol but it is said to be one of the most conroversial symbols around. Though now, the lambda symbol generally represents lesbian and gay men's concerns.

Gay Pride Flag w/ Triangle in it: During the time of Hitler, the Nazi's labled people with colored triangles: Green was for a regular criminal; Red was for a political prisoner; 2 Yellow triangles overlapping each other (making the star of David) represented a Jewish prisoner and so on. These individuals had to wear these triangles at the concentration camps as an embarrassment, but also so everyone knew what they were there for.

The Nazi's put Pink Triangles on homosexual prisoners.
Then, in the 1970's, Gay liberation groups started using the pink triangle as a symbol for the gay rights movement.

Overlapping Pink & Blue Triangles are now commonly known to represent Bisexual people.

The Leather Pride Flag is a suport symbol for the gay leather/S&M community.

The Bear Pride Flag is a support symbol for the gay bear community.
