A Word From the Former Mayor of Middletown Township

The following was written on May 14,1997 by the at time Mayor of Middletown Township, Raymond J. O'Grady

Some have prophesied the death of volunteerism, but there are no signs of its demise here in Middletown Township. Our fire department, of which the first company was established in 1886, is the world's largest volunteer fire department. It is also, without a doubt, the best one.

Each day our firefighters stand ready to protect our greatest assets, our families and our property. They sacrifice their time and more importantly, their lives to ensure our safety.

In today's fast-paced society, it is a comfort to know there still are men and women such as those who volunteer for the Middletown Township Fire Department. Their service to the township is a shining example of the genre of volunteerism we have in our community.

Our firefighters don't get a paycheck for their efforts and they don't seek praise. However, we should all be thankful our community is home to hundreds of members of the Middletown Township Fire Department.

The next time you see one of our courageous volunteers, don't forget to say thanks. It's the least we can do.

-Raymond J. O'Grady, Former Mayor of Middletown
