Backstreet Boys!

You've been with the Backstreet Boys for over five years now, how do you think you've changed since you started?
NICK: I think we've all grown up in many ways. It's very important to grow and develop along with your fans. We haven't moved too far from our original sound, though. The current album is still similar to the first one, although we have have managed to develop a pretty unique sound.

What's the best thing about being a huge world-known pop stars?
AJ: In many ways the whole experience of touring in Europe kis like being in a giant dream world. I love it when things are really hectic and I'm surrounded by screaming girls. That's really cool. It's funny because when i go back home I get really bored because there are no fans around me. Life can be really dull. Sometimes I just can't stand it.

So you don't get mobbed when you're back home in the USA?
BRIAN: We do have fans in America but not such a wide range, although that's starting to change now. We've been in Europe a lot longer than the US, so there are a lot more types of people who like our songs. There are young girls, older girls, families and couples. it's really exciting to see that our music is influencing such a lot of people. As time goes by, hopefully, that will happen in the US, too.
AJ: When we become really big in the US, we'll have nowhere to go where there aren't fans. There will be girls knocking at my door every day. but that's the kind if thing you've got to expect in this business. I don't mind.

What's the first thing you do when you get back home after touring?
BRIAN: I do my laundry. I wash all my clothes because we're usually only at home for a few days, so it's best to get that done. I like to rest as well because I'm usually very tired. I also like to drive around in my jeep, but it's never usually too long before we're all back off, out on the road again.

Don't you ever get bored when you're doing the same show night after night?
AJ: Every show we do is different. We never know what's going to happen every time. Something may break on stage, who knows? There is always something new in every concert we do. We're acting crazier and crazier on stage each time.

Is the last show you in a country always a special one for you?
AJ: I think every final show we do in a country is always a bit heartbreaking. We know that we're hurting our fans by going away and we don't really know when we might be ablt to come back.

What do you do when you get a day off from touring?
AJ: I love to shop. I shop until I'm broke! If you were to give me a hundred dollars, I'd spend a hundred and five! I'm not really moderate with money when I buy clothes. I love to buy clothes and I really like to go to the movies, too. i saw Alien Resurrection recently, and it was great. Sometimes I go go-karting too.

Do you do everything as a group?
AJ: It's funny because on our days off, we all try and do our own thing. We spend so much time together anyway that we don't get much of a chance to do things on our own. Sometimes, we do go out together. Nick and Brian play basketball together. Kev, Howie and I sometimes go clubbing. And in the evening, we all end up coming together for dinner.

What do you think of all-girl groups, like the Spice Girls?
NICK: I think they're OK. It's cool. Why does it just have to be a guy thing after all? Girls can make it big in pop too. that's what this world is all about. There are men and women, so why not have all-girl bands, too?
AJ: I think the reason why the Spice Girls did so well when they first came out was because they were all really different. And they all have crazy personalities.

How would you rate your singing voices?
NICK: I think that my voice has developed. I was a 13 year old kid on the first album. Now I'm 17, so the sound is very different. it's pretty cool because we've all grown up with it and all our voices have developed. I think that the songs we sing now are much stronger. it's hard for certian groups to reach the top with a first album, but I think we have managed to do it twice over.
AJ: We have the experience of having performed the songs from our first album on stage in front of an audience, which was helpful. I think that we have developed a lot in the way we perform songs. When you constantly practice something, like singing, it becomes a much easier thing to do. I think we have become much more comfortable with what we do with this record. I think that we are all really happy with our second album.

The Backstreet Boys have been a huge success in Australi, what dreams have come true for all of you since you joined the band?
BRIAN: One of my dreams when I grew up was to have a gold record on my wall. And now I have ots of them. They're really great. They're something that remind us of all the work we have put in and of all the different countries we have been to. there are lots of different flags on them, too, so we can look at them and say, "I've been there and the people loved us there!" It's a nice feeling.
AJ: All of us guys in the band have the same dream. we've always wanted to be successful and to be respected by other music artists. And we are going to achieve that dream as a band, by continuing to push on and on!
