~ A Popular Sport In Pennsylvania ~

Flyfishing in Pennsylvania has become a well-known sport over the years. Contrary to popular belief, it is not only performed to catch trout, but is also used to catch bluegill, bass, pike, stripers, tarpon, and anything else possessing fins. It is a very graceful and beautiful sport.

When flyfishing, you cast a "flyline" attached to a leader and fly with a flyrod. The fly is virtually weightless. The leader to which the fly is attached is usually approximately 9 feet in length. The leader is attached to a flyline, which is routinely about 90 feet in length. The flyline is constructed of a flexible plastic and fairly heavy in weight. This attaches to the flyrod, which is usually between 7 and 10 feet long. During flycasting, the flyline is the item which provides the weight needed to load the rod and propel itself towards the target. The leader and the fly are essentially "along for the ride". It is imperative to remember that you are casting the line, not the fly. The line and rod must match each other in order to function properly.

The purpose is to cast virtually weightless flies and present them in a very delicate manner. The flyrod is the equipment of choice for the majority of trout fisherman, especially in streams. Since the majority of the diet of a stream trout is small stream insects, flyfishing is the easiest way to fool the trout and attract it. Most people flyfish for the challenge and joy received from using such a creative tool.

Having been fortunate to have someone take me flyfishing, I can tell you that it is a fabulous and unique experience. To don the gear appropriate to entering streams is somewhat time-consuming, but adds to the excitement of the adventure. Having the person who is taking you be a "guide" also affords the vast knowledge of which are the best streams in the area to enjoy your fishing adventure to its upmost. Once "geared up" and in the water, it is incredible to see fish swim right past your legs. There is such a calming effect the nature has on you that you literally block out everything else.

In preparing to go flyfishing, I was shown the various flies, leaders, rods, and wearable equipment available. Awestruck by it all, my interest to flyfish only grew stronger. We sat several nights at the fly-tying table with me watching as a fly was created from thread and material. Seeing the result made me realize what a talent was possessed by this person to create a replica of a creation by God! Helping to tie leaders and flies was an experience in itself and one not forgotten easily. A person must have a tremendous amount of patience and calmness to create such wonders.

Going on a "vacation" for flyfishing one weekend was another enlightening experience. We went to a location at the far north portion of Pennsylvania called Starlight. There was a resort strictly maintained for flyfishers located there. Fishing actually occurred on the Delaware River...a breathtaking sight as you approach the vastness of the river. It was actually the perfect weather for fishing....foggy, damp, rainy. The fish loved it, and so did the anglers! Another area popular for flyfishing in Pennsylvania is the Lehigh Valley Area, with the Lehigh River being the most well-known area in which to flyfish.

Pennsylvania has a vast amount of streams from which flyfishing is accessible to experience. Below I have included many links regarding flyfishing. Please take the time to browse thru the sites and explore the vastness of this graceful sport.
