The Poconos ... "The Resort Heaven of Pennsylvania"

Located in the northeastern portion of the state of Pennsylvania, the Pocono Mountains encompasses approximately 2,400 square miles of woodland areas in four separate counties. Those counties housing the Poconos include Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne. Within the four counties, 150 different lakes are present. Constructed by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company, Lake Wallenpaupack is one of the largest man-made lakes in the state. With the many lakes flows 3 rivers which divert to dozens of winding streams and breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls. The rivers flowing thru the Poconos include the Delaware River, Lehigh River, and the Lackawaxen River.

One of the most beautiful waterfall sites within the Pocono Mountain region is Bushkill Falls. Often referred to as the "Niagara of Pennsylvania", it consists of a continuous series of 8 waterfalls and is accessible via a conglomeration of hiking trails and bridges. The Main Falls are 100-foot in height and can be viewed from the top if you accept nature's challenge of the hiking trails. Other sites to view while at Bushkill Falls are the Pennsylvania Wildlife Exhibit, Native American Exhibit, and Twin Lakes.

The Poconos, to which it is often referred, houses 7 state parks. One of the state parks, Lehigh Gorge State Park, is located just outside of Weatherly in a small rural community known as Rockport. Within the past several years, Rockport has become a very popular area of interest to many tourists and local residents due to the direct access to the Lehigh River. The interest was created by Whitewater Rafting, which has become an extremely popular recreational activity within the area.

Because of the vast amount of lakes and rivers within its domain, the Poconos has become a very popular fishing dome for avid outdoorsmen. Trout and bass are only 2 of the many fish present within our bodies of water. In recent years fly-fishing has become a popular sport within the area and several Outfitters are available for use as not only suppliers of equipment, but also as guides.

Best known for its vast wildlife menagerie, one will often find deer ambling about freely within the Pocono Mountains. In fact, living close to a wooded area, I am often able to look out my windows to the backyard and find a deer roaming....often times "checking out" the apples fallen from the trees. However, even though the deer may enter into your yard, they are still known to the "wild" and are frightened of human presence.

Also known as a "Romantic Hideaway" and the "Honeymoon Capital of the World", the Poconos offers many inns, motels, and hotels. It has grown tremendously as a resort area and now offers year-round activities. Skiing, of course, is the best known activity with several ski resorts available, such as Jack Frost, Big Boulder Ski Area, Montage Mountain, Elk Mountain, and Camelback Ski Resort.

Another exciting activity contained in the Poconos is the Pocono International Raceway. Located in Long Pond, it is a 2-and-a-half mile super speedway constructed for Indy car races. It now hosts NASCAR races regularly and brings many race fans to its dwelling.

A popular attraction during the fall season is the "Fall Foliage" period of time. This usually occurs near the middle of September and lasts into early October. Various areas within the Poconos have guided tours and "viewing times" scheduled. Many people travel from far distances to view the breathtakingly unique colors of the foliage in this area. Below is a common view seen by many residents and tourists within the Pocono Mountain Region.
