What Is IRC Anyway?

Internet Relay Chat

My online friends from Mississippi with me at Red Lobsters in Jackson, Mississippi. L to R: Aquaman, me, Dewey-69, Rainnee, and Brandywines :)

What is IRC? IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's the most innovative way of chatting to people real time without having to constantly refresh your screen every minute! The best part about IRC is that it is completely free to use!! (With the exception of what it costs to get online).

I started chatting on IRC in August of 1996. Since then I have met hundreds of people and even started a room of my own called #TheAlley which you can find on DALnet. I have met some of the people from my chat room and over the years they have become some of my best friends. They come from all over the world. England, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, and the United States. They range in age from 18 to who knows how old (some are too shy to tell!). They are married, single, divorced, strange, and humorus. I have a hard time going even a day without hearing from at least one of them!!

There are different IRC programs that you can download off the web for free. pIRCh for Windows95, mIRC for Windows95, and IRCle for Macintosh. You can also do a webcrawler search to find extra links to other webpages for IRC. There are some really great sites out there.

So if you ever get brave enough, or curious enough, download IRC and come chat with me and my friends in #TheAlley. I guarantee you will have the time of your life!!!
