Principally recorded at Sound Stage Studio, Nashville, Tennessee and A.R.P. Track Productions, St. Anne Des Lacs, Canada. All songs written by Shania Twain and Robert John "Mutt" Lange except "You Win My Love" (Robert John "Mutt" Lange) and "Leaving Is The Only Way Out" (Shania Twain). THE WOMAN IN ME won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Any Man Of Mine" was nominated for Grammys for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. Shania Twain was nominated for the Grammy for Best New Artist. The low, sultry voice of Canadian Shania Twain serves her well on THE WOMAN IN ME. This is a compact collection of middle-of-the-road country, warped by the rock influence of Twain's producer/husband, Mutt Lange. Twain is not just a singer; she also co-wrote most of the songs with Lange, and they run the gamut from soft ballad to reeling rock. The opening track is a slow, slurry ballad that would be just as comfortable on the adult contemporary charts as on the country charts, and is reminiscent of Bette Midler's style of balladeering. The single "Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" is a bouncy shuffle that could bring Twain to the forefront of country music. Her vocal is pure country, straight from yesteryear, a matured Brenda Lee. But with thick, rock-oriented production, there isn't much, besides Twain's twang, that labels this album "country."

  • Tuesday, November 04, 1997 Original Year 1997 Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange Studio/Live Studio Mono/Stereo Stereo Label Mercury Nashville Catalog# 536003 UPC 73145360032 Album Notes: Personnel: Shania Twain, Bryan White (vocals); Dann Huff (acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, electric sitar, 6-string bass); Biff Watson (acoustic & electric guitars); Larry Byrom (slide guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Eric Silver (mandolin); Bruce Bouton (pedal steel & lap steel guitars); John Hughey, Paul Franklin (pedal steel guitar); Larry Franklin, Rob Hajacos, Stuart Duncan, Joe Spivey, Glen Duncan, Aubrey Haynie (fiddle); Joey Miskulin (accordion); John Hobbs (piano, organ, Wurlitzer); Arthur Stead (piano, organ, synthesizer); Michael O'Martian, John Jarvis (piano); Joe Chemay (electric & fretless basses); Paul Leim (drums); Olle Romo (programming); Robert John "Mutt" Lange (background vocals). Engineers: Jeff Balding, Bob Bullock, Mike Carroll, Brian Tankersley, Olle Romo. Following her smash hit THE WOMAN IN ME was no easy task for Shania Twain and husband/producer Mutt Lange. With COME ON OVER the sexy vixen of modern country has carved out a bigger niche for herself that is sure to please her growing throng of fans. With a huge helping of rock and roll added to her country trimmings, Twain proves her success has been no fluke. As a rule, she goes out of her way to break the traditional Nashville mold. Even her songwriting skills are at the forefront; Shania and Mutt co-wrote all the songs on this collection. Sounding like a disciple of Linda Ronstadt and Tina Turner with a dash of Tanya Tucker, Twain launches into country-club rockers like "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!," "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)," and "Rock This Country!" with a fervor. A guest shot by singer Bryan White adds a touch of drama to the powerful "From This Moment On." Top-40 flavored tunes abound on the rest of the disc including "Love Gets Me Every Time," "If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!," and even the country-fied hip-hop of "Honey, I'm Home." Finally, the acoustic ballad "You've Got A Way" adds a soft touch to round out the set. Album Review: Rolling Stone (12/11/97, p.80) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...Twain bombards you with plastic hooks as tight as her trousers....songs are speedier and more concise..." Entertainment Weekly (11/14/97, pp.88-89) - "...deep down, these are all country songs at heart, and that's precisely the way Twain treats them..." - Rating: B+
