This is
me. My name is Scott Douglas Sanford. I have been
involved in music since the ripe old age of four, when I
started playing the piano at church. The first song I
learned how to play was "One Day at a Time", an
old hymn that I can still remember to this day.
My father was a piano and organ salesman, so whenever I would go to his work, I would pick up little rifs here and there... listening to the customers play, and watching my dad demonstrate the various organs and pianos. After a while, I learned what music theory was, and started putting together my own musical pieces. They were, to say the least, less than extraordinary, but at 8 years old, you can't expect much! Ha ha!
I went on and played piano, practicing -- not every day, but almost. My mother bought me the best present I ever got on Easter Sunday, 1981... an upright piano. I swear, I must have worn the ivory keys down to the wood, playing it so much. I never learned how to read piano music, much to my piano teacher's dismay (and anger). I believe I had two lessons with her, and when I couldn't tell her the difference between a half note and a quarter note, she left the room! I guess you could say that my days of classical musical training were over! I never went back after those two "lessons". Everything I learned from that day on I learned by ear. But I didn't mind. The choice as I saw it was:
- Go to a boring, 8x4 room, listen to a metronome go click, click, click... and having some old lady crack on my knuckles every time I hit a wrong note, or
- Watch Billy Joel on a TV special, or Jerry Lee Lewis, and learn directly from the masters themselves!
(I chose #2!) And I am very pleased with the results! Now, keep in mind that THAT was just piano. Guitar came next.
At the ripe old age of 13, I picked up a guitar for the very first time. Well, maybe not the first time, but certainly the first time I ever actually tried to play one! And, of course, there was plenty of people on TV and in the movies that were playing the guitar. I listened, and I watched, and I learned. That's when my songwriting really started taking off! I didn't have the money to buy sheet music for songs, (which would have done me no good anyway, since I couldn't read music) so I just started writing my own songs! And now, some 15 years later, I still play piano and guitar, and I learned how to sing somewhere along the line, and my musicality has grown leaps and bounds!
My next step is to move to Nashville, Tennessee and see if I can do anything with my songwriting. I can't wait to go to the Bluebird Cafe and show off my music! Who knows? The next time you hear my music, it MAY be on the radio! Keep your ears open! I'll do my part!
Thank you for coming to my web site. Please take the time to fill out my guestbook. It only takes a few minutes, and it's input that I desperately need. Take care, and God bless.
