Kenny
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier-say what?
That's basically the response I get from most people when I tell them what breed of dog Kenny is. If you want a physical description of him- he's 19 and a half inches at the withers, a slightly wavy blonde coat, deep brown eyes ( although you can't really see them because his bangs cover them up) a big black nose and a docked tail.
My breeder (and everyone else that meets him) says that his appearance is really nice.
But Kenny is so much more than that. He isn't like any dog I've ever known. He's bouncy, enthusiastic and extremely loyal but is not a "one-person" dog. My breeder says that Wheatens are "extended family" animals. For instance, if everybody is in their own room, Kenny will constantly patrol the house and visit each family member- he picks no favourites, everyone in the "pack" is equally important to him. Also, if most of the family is in bed, Kenny tends to herd the remaining *awake* members upstairs. He won't fall asleep himself until EVERYONE is all tucked in. My dog really likes everyone in his family- and loves showing it! Nothing feels better than coming home to a wheaten with his short tail wagging quickly, and a joyful expression on his face!
Allergy Free!
Yup, its true. Wheatens have very soft coats that are non-shedding and hypoallergenic. My dad and I have pretty bad dog allergies and we're fine with Kenny. Of course, the coat does require frequent brushings and combings. Fortunately though, my pooch behaves well on the grooming table. He'll stand, sit, lay down and even roll over on his back. He doesn't even flinch when Mom uses the electric clipper to trim some areas of his coat, or when she uses the nail trimmers or grooming shears! He's also behaved in the bath. He doesn't seem to mind being all wet, or the loud noise the hair dryer makes.
He loves dog toothpaste and his favourite flavours are malt and peanut butter *yum yum*. Sometimes it's hard to brush his teeth because he tries to lick the toothpaste off of the brush, but usually he stays pretty still.
Tricks for Treats
Kennykins has mastered a few ticks. He can roll over, give paw, give other paw, be a bear (that's when he sits on his haunches and waves his paws around in the air), beg and speak on command.
Play Bow
Kenny-lou gets along great with other dogs, especially other Wheatens. He likes going to the off leash zones and running around with his friends.
Ken Ken loves to perform. In his obedience classes he was used as an example to demonstrate commands.
Kenny is such a huggable, beautiful wheaten and I feel very lucky to have him.
