James Galway was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on December 8, 1939. He began playing the penny whistle as a child, soon after picking up the flute. After two years, James won top prizes in three categories at a local flute contest. He continued studying flute at the Royal College of Music, The Guildhall School in London, and the Paris Conservatory.

James professional career started as an orchestral player with the Wind Band of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon which led to positions with the BBC Orchestra, the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 1975 he began his solo career and within the first year performed 120 concerts, including appearances with all four major British orchestras.
