My Scoliosis Page

The reason for this page? The reason for this page is to give a little information and background of this disease and to come into contact with others who have scoliosis like myself (more about me and my scoliosis at the bottom of page).

Ok, some of you may be wondering what Scoliosis is. So, that is why I made this link to my page. Many people may have not even heard of the term or if they have, they don't really know what it is or what it's about (or even how to spell it). Let me inform you as many kids may think, Scoliosis has nothing to do with a broken back! And it is not contagious, you can't catch it from someone! Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine which can be very moderate or severe. It can be seen if severe or it may not even be noticeable if the case is very moderate. It can cause one hip to be higher than the other, or one leg to be shorter than the other also. Either way it must be corrected and treated to prevent further curvature. There are school screenings to detect Scoliosis.

To correct it, there is surgical procedures or braces that you wear, or even chiropractors now are trying to cure it. It can occur during the teenage years or it can be congenital (at birth).

In my case, I have congenital scoliosis. I have had 3 surgeries (spinal fusions at the top and bottom of my spine) at ages 6 months, 3, and 8. I have worn braces (no longer) to help support my back area. It is not an easy thing to deal with especially when you are in school. Kids will pick and stare, but only because they don't know what is wrong with you. But that is just immaturity of kids. Braces are very uncomfortable, I must admit and very hot to wear, you itch a lot and it just feels very uncomfortable. I am now 26 and have no major problems. Scoliosis is not an everyday topic for me and I don't go around telling people that I have it, but I do and it is an everyday thing I have to deal with. I do have hip and back pain when standing or walking for long periods of time.

If you would like to e-mail me or chat, please do. E-mail: cphipps73@earthlink.net, or ICQ # 4730120. I know there are a lot of support groups dealing with scoliosis on the net. When you have the time, please look them up.
