(From the "Breakfast Club" episode)
Joey: Unrealistic? Dawson, your favorite movie is ET.
Dawson: So?
Joey: A fat-fingered alien who eats Reeses Pieces and flies around on a bicycle?

Joey has a life that should be wished upon no one. Her mother died from cancer a few years back, and her father is in jail. She lives with her older sister and her sisters black boyfriend, Bode. Her sister also had a baby recently, and she isn't married to Bode. Joey has a bad reputation with the small town folks in Capeside.

She has a tough-girl attitude and seems scared to get close to anyone, except best- friend Dawson. Joey refuses to open up to poor Jen, who has bent over backwards to try to be nice to her. She seems to shut out anyone who tries to get close to her, including Jen, Pacey, and her Dad (I can't blame her for not liking her Dad). For a long time there have been major clues to an underlying crush on best-friend Dawson. She seemed jealous when Jen and Dawson were dating. After Jen dumped Dawson, Joey didn't exactly jump at the chance to catch him on the rebound. There has been an odd tension between the two for a long time now. For a while Dawson and Pacey seemed to have been "fighting" over her. Dawson didn't make any moves to start a more-than-friends relationship, but yet he wouldn't let anyone else have her either.

It was not until the pageant that Dawson finally cracked and saw the true beauty in Joey that had been there all along. He was left in a state of shock after seeing her walk onto the stage in her gown, with her hair all done up. Dawson had tried to express his feelings, but unfortunately had the wrong timing. In the season finale the two kiss for the first time in Dawson's bedroom.

The summer romance was apparently too much for Joey to handle and so she broke it off shortly after school started to do some soul searching of her own. Dawson was absolutely devastated at the news. The two are on a "friends" basis now.
