Chapter 2

Now the big game is actually here. It isn't a reverie or a nightmare, I'm in its presence; I'm in the presence of the moment that we all have waited for since the beginning of the season. we had anticipated it so much and it has finally come. The last and biggest of our games is the East Carter Cardinals, our rivals, again'st our Thomasville Tigers.

Our fans cheer us on from the bleachers, and we all feel a surge of pride that we get to represent this spirit. As I survey the crowd, I can see my family, Mom, Dad, Robert and Airika, and lots of people from school. The few others that I reconize right away are Andy, Derek, Fiona and Kevin. With all this support, it will be impossible to lose this game.

The umpire signals the start of the game, and from there, it slowly creeps by. Both teams give up few runs during the course of this time. As the catcher, I play as defensively as I can. By the bottom of the last inning, we are trailling by two, with two outs, and I'm next to bat.

I step up to the plate, and on the first pitch, a ball, the runner on second steals third. I'll almost definately get an RBI if I hit the ball.

The pitcher for the other team is quite tired now, and it shows in her performance. She can still pitch over the plate, but not with any speed. If I wait for my pitch, I can hit the ball over the fence.

On the next pitch, my instinct takes over. I swing the bat harder than I ever have before. I felt the absolute power flow through my arms, then I saw the ball land just short of the fence. Echoing through my head were the words, "run, run run!" So, run I did.

When I was safely at third base, the people were going crazy for me. This is great, people are actually cheering for me! Now, we were only down by one, and if I could make it home, we would be tied with the Cardinals.
