My new interest is German in addition to Music!

Hi, I recently became interested in the German language. Ever since I became a college student and began to major in Music Education, I never considered taking a language. I don't know why. I guess I had the attitude that if I didn't need it, why take it, and as everyone knows, Ed. majors are not required to take foreign language.

Well, I temporarily decided to change my major to Sociology. I say temporary because it lasted only a semester before I missed Music. Anyway, I enrolled in a Spanish class and when I decided to change my major back to music,I decided to keep the class since I hadn't taken foreign language in a while and thought it might be interesting. Well, it was too late to sign up for music classes so I thought to myself "hmmmm" what can I take. Intro to language is always 4hrs and I thought why not keep Spanish and add two more 4hr classes and that would put me at full time. Well, since there aren't many 4hour classes I was stumped, until a friend suggested German.

My first though was "NO WAY" because I had heard how hard the language was. But I was feeling brave and adventurous and I thought why not. So, I added German and Statistics because I was originally taking Statistics for my Sociology major and I decided to keep it. Well, surprisingly I liked German, and more than Spanish despite my doing equally well in both, and I was making A's. "Who would have thought? Hillary liking German!" Well, I thought why not take another semester of it, which brings me to the present. I'm currently in my second semester of German and I love it. I believe that things happen for a reason. I had always gone through life with not many interests outside of music.

Although changing my major set me back a year or two, I believe that I became disinterested for a reason. I needed to explore more and see what else was out there. If I had not done so, then I would never have found out that I have a strong interest in foreign language, esp. German. So, now I am pursuing a minor and have even asked and been granted special permission to take an upperlevel German class in the summer to help me finish my minor quicker. So, now I am a Music Ed. major with a minor in German.

I am not sure what level of school I would like to teach. Any level would be satisfactory to me and eventually I would like to have experience at different levels and types of music classes. Some people may believe that you should just come to college and get a degree as fast as possible but what is the point of getting a degree in something that you can't use or don't even like when it affects how you will spend the rest of your life. Why should 5 or 6yrs matter in college finishing a degree you want to use the rest of your life, when it would be ten times worse finishing in 4 years with a degree that will make you miserable the rest of your life. My advice is take your time and know that what you choose is best for you! This is my instrument can you guess what it is? Exacto!!The Clarinet.
