[MWD][ This could alternatively be translated as "heart", but I preferred
      "spirit".  Mind you, this is not the "ghost" meaning of spirit. ]


[TM] [ Since this is a reference to the novel by Natsume Soseki, it might be 
      interesting to see how the title of that novel has been translated. Does
      anyone know?]


[BC] [Hm, I'm not so sure.  I'm one who falls into the "Heart" camp,
      especially because of the prominence of the heart symbol in
      the story (among other reasons).]


[MWD][After a reread, I have to agree with you.  Especially after the
      "watashi ha godai-sensei no kokoro ga shiritai no desu." speech on
      p78.  Although this reads almost closer to "feelings"...]


[YS] [A search in the UT library system on-line catalog system turned up
      nothing useful.  The book is under "Kokoro", and no translations are
      made.
      I personally think "Heart" is better than "Spirit", but as Michael
      pointed out, the meaning used in the chapter is closer to "Feeling"...


      Incidentally, UT has a Hebrew version of this novel.  Just thought that
      was interesting  ^_^. ]


[YS] [This is mostly just background info, but what happens in the story is
      that "I" moves in to this boarding house, since he has a friend there (K).
      During the story, "I" begins to be a little repulsed by the pensive,
      philosophical ways of K (I believe K was the son of a Buddhist temple
      monk).  It also seemed to "I" that K wasn't interested in women, because
      of various things.


      However, "I" is surprised to find out that K was beginning to change, and
      finds out (from K) that K is in love with the "daughter".


      As time passes, the "daughter" also shows signs of closeness towards K,
      as well as "I".  "I" also finds out that K plans to propose to her.


      Right before that happens, when both K and the "daughter" are not home,
      "I" goes to the "widow", and asks for her daughter, to which the "widow"
      says yes.


      I can't remember if it was right after that, or not, but K commits
      suicide in his room...


      And "I" marries the "daughter", but for the rest of his life, he basically
      lives like a hermit, regretting what had happened and living in
      remorse.  (Incidentally, the "daughter" never knows why K commits
      suicide, and never finds out.  "I" thinks about telling her so many times,
      but can't, since he doesn't want to make her unhappy, and take away from
      her happy life.)]

backwards in a chair with her legs crossed, resting her chin

      and boring".

envelope (which Kyoko has in her left hand.)  There are
two canceled stamps in the upper left-hand portion, plus
some writing along the bottom which I can't make out.
Another mail cancellation stamp appears on top of the
right portion of the illegible writing.
