The first album was more experimental in terms of sound , it was also more idea based than song based . They were more serious about the songs for Strop .
Industrial reflected in what the band does means using the sounds of industry , sounds that you wouldn't normally find in music , sounds that are maybe considered non-musical . But they believe that there is definitely music in there , when you walk into a factory all these rythms going , all that stuff , there is definitely music there .
How do they go about engineering their live performances ? They have tracks running off the sampler , basically drum sounds , some bass sounds , weird samples like vocal samples . They have four percussion setups on stage that they mike up & play live . Huyser plays a big drum , an oil drum , with a ten kilogram hammer . Paul plays an airvent and they have a live guitarist on stage . Paul does live vocals and they have a painter , Huyser , doing live action painting .
Paul has a parallel project going , called Breinskade . How different is it from Battery9 ? Breinskade came at a time when Paul was obsessed with Rotterdam hardcore techno , in the form of Oranje Boven , etc. Breinskade is extremely fast , extremely hard and it's quite funny also . People sometimes call it happy hardcore . Live it's a 10 minute show , it's very short . They dress in the most tasteless clothes they can find and they smash things . They used to play the CreepyCrawly , but that got smashed .
This lot comes from an interview with Battery9 on 5FM sometime in September '96
Student Life interview with Paul ; November 1996 .
