MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND update:

The 2CD MMEB live set "Mann Alive" was issued by Virgin on June 8, 1998. This set is basically highlights from the "Soft Vengeance" tour, in that each track fades out instead of having a complete concert or composite performance. The tracks on "Mann Alive" are as follows:

DISC 1 (The Gig): Martha's Madman; The Times They Are A-Changin'; You Angel You; Father Of Day, Father Of Night; For You; It's A Fine Line; Demolition Man; Nothing Ever Happens; Blinded By The Light; Davy's On The Road Again
DISC 2 (Encore And More): Redemption Song; Mighty Quinn; Demolition Man (short version); I'll Give You; Shelter From The Storm; Blinded By The Light (short version); Redemption Song; Instrumedicine Song (from "Plains Music); Sikelele I (from "Plains Music")

The entire MMEB album catalog originally on the Bronze label was released on the Cohesion label in Germany on November 6, 1998. The first six CDs reissued (with BONUS TRACKS) are:

1) Messin' (BONUS TRACKS: "Pretty Good" plus other tracks to be determined)
2) Solar Fire (BONUS TRACKS: "Joybringer (US album edit)"; "Father Of Day, Father Of Night (previously unreleased edit)"
3) The Good Earth (this one really needs it! - BONUS TRACKS: "Be Not Too Hard (single edit)"; "I'll Be Gone (single edit)"; "Earth Hymn Part 2A (single edit)"
4) The Roaring Silence (BONUS TRACKS: "Spirits In The Night (single version)"; "Blinded By The Light (single edit)"
5) Watch (BONUS TRACKS: "California (single edit)"; "Davy's On The Road Again (single version)"; "Mighty Quinn (single version)"; "Bouillabaisse (single version)"
6) Plains Music (BONUS TRACKS: "Salmon Fishing" (from US CD version); "L.I.A.S.O.M. (previously unreleased version of "Geronimo's Cadillac" as picked by Manfred)"

Bonus tracks consist of non-LP cuts, single edits and tracks previously unreleased outside of North America. The number of bonus tracks will vary per album (usually 2-4), but not all of them will be released on these CDs. You know what that means! There's something else in your future. . . The remastering of these albums is in the capable hands of Robert Corich, who has done an excellent job in remastering the Uriah Heep and Nazareth back catalogs for Castle Communications. Greg Russo is providing Robert with tape and track information for each release. These will be the definitive versions of these albums. Incidentally, the bonus tracks were drawn using "Mannerisms" as a guide. Thanks to ROBERT CORICH for this information. Preliminary work is already being done for the next batch of remasters, and two other "Best of" CDs on Earth Band material are being assembled now.

Speaking of preliminary work, Manfred and Mick Rogers have been putting together material for the next Earth Band album. The way things stand now, expect some electronic elements to accompany the band's performance. To close out 1998, Manfred sued the act Massive Attack for using a sample of the MMEB debut LP track "Tribute" in their cut "Black Milk." Those naughty boys! If you must check it out for yourself, it's on Massive Attack's "Mezzanine" CD. Please note that this is not an endorsement!

On the Manfred Mann CD front, RPM's first-time CD release of the "Up The Junction" soundtrack took place in August 1998. The B-side "Sleepy Hollow" is the only bonus track. After years of waiting, "Soul Of Mann" was finally issued on CD by EMI in January 1999. The CD contains the mono and stereo mixes of the original album, and contains the best examples of Jack Bruce's playing with the band on "Tengo, Tango" and "Spirit Feel." Buy it now - it's essential!

In addition, Radio Gloucestershire is broadcasting it during the last hour of the Steve Knibbs show every Monday evening, and Wiltshire Sound added the program in August 1997. d'Abo continues to play some dates with his band, The Mighty Quintet.

There is a new Mike d'Abo appreciation society called Nightowls.
