The Gaza Strip is a narrow band of desertlike land along the western Mediterranean coast. It has been fought over by Israelite Jews who claim they have descended from the tribe that used to live there and the Palestinians for many years and is a continuing territorial dispute. Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, China, was the site of a massacre of demonstrating pro-democracy students in June of 1989.
