In my opinion one of the best bands that has ever existed is The Who. Pete Townshend is a great guitarist, and among the many things he did was discover feedback. Pete also plays Piano, Synthesizers (Including one that he made up the technology for, where someone's biological background was programmed in and various factors where picked to use-this synth is used in the song Baba O'Riley), Ukulele, Banjo, and the accordian on the song "Squeeze Box." John Entwistle is a wonderful bassist, and he really shines on songs like "My Generation," "Happy Jack," "Boris The Spider," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and "Dreaming From The Waist." He also plays brass on the Who's albums. Roger Daltrey, although he doesn't play any instrument, in his own right is one of the most powerful musicians. He has an amazingly capable voice, and he uses it to really bring out the best in songs. In fact, on Tommy, he plays the parts of all the characters, including men AND women. Finally, of course, there is Keith Moon, probably one of the best, if not the very best, rock drummer of all time. Keith Moon was so incredible in everything he played, and he could use drum-cymbal interaction that could awe anyone. He inspired drummers such as John Bonham and Clem Burke, and was in fact Jimmy Page's first choice as drummer for Led Zeppelin, as was John Entwistle for bass player. Fortunately, Keith and John were already in the Who and were loyal to their band and stayed on with them. Sadly, Keith died in 1978 after years of drugs, alcohol and a wild lifestyle caught up with him. The Who continued on for several years without him, although the band was never really the same.
I used to have the reasons why Led Zeppelin was a rip-off of The Who here, but I started getting into Led Zeppelin and realized they were a good band. Apologies for my prevous pettiness.
In case anyone wants to know or cares, here is my current Who CD collection. I am hoping to add reviews of each of them some time:
