From Cab Calloway to Dean Martin swing has always meant style, expressing an intensity and naked truth that in this day and age offers a way of coping with the contrived cynicism of the "alternative" world. The music of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies is a union of the compositional elements and spirit of swing with a modern rock sensibility.
This strange coupling has made the Daddies one of the most popular bands in the nation, regularly drawing sell-out crowds. Live, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies are out of control. Lead singer/songwriter Steve Perry has been called everything from the most debonair cat on earth to a completely demented spaz. Perry's biggest influence lies in what he calls the cheesy schmaltz masters. "Guys like Jerry Lewis and authors like Jack Kerouac and Henry Miller, what they share is that they're exuberant, they're alive... they want to live," Perry suggests.
Like Steve Perry, all members of the band are bright, energetic, and physical enough to craft an animated, tangible rock and roll performance. The band's distinct signature, of course, is the sharp, punchy horn section, comprised of Ian Early on alto sax, Sean Flannery on tenor sax, and Dana Heitman on trumpet. Whether stabbing and blasting into the air above the crowd or trailing delicate arabesques through the body of the song, the horns are always on display. And always popular.
The distinctive style and feel of the Daddies, influenced by a synthesis of Punk and Jazz, infuses their first two full-length CD releases -Ferociously Stoned and Rapid City Muscle Car - with boppin' rockin' life.
Both received widespread and excellent reviews and to-date have sold over 100,000 units. Following the release of their third CD -- Kids on the Street -- an exploration of the band's roots in power-pop and ska, augmenting gold-plated punk anthems with tasty horn arrangements-the Daddies traversed the United States three times, which included playing opening dates for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Kids climbed onto the Alternative Chart in Rolling Stone, with 25,000 units out of the box.
In March 1997, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies released their fourth CD, Zoot Suit Riot - The Swingin' Hits, a compilation of the rockin' Swing tunes from their first three CDs plus four new big-band scorchers. A contemporary hybrid combining classic Swing with punk rock intensity, this new release showcases the deft craftsmanship of the Daddies: songs rich in language, morally pointed and funny, and their dense yet lyrical signature horn arrangements. Zoot Suit Riot has gone platinum, selling over 1,000,000 units and climbing into the Billboard Top 20. Recent appearances by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies on the Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman bode well for the meteoric resurgence of the Swing movement, and with the fresh, eclectic, revolutionary fervor of the Daddies, it promises to be a fruitful and raucous ride.
With each new song and each show the Cherry Poppin' Daddies take the best of American music forward.
