My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine originate from Dublin and it took the band several years (and several record labels) to develop their ground-breaking sound - a mixture of almost 'intangible' studio-orientated melodies and discordant sounds - which later came to be extremely influential on the independence scene of the late 80's. This BRILLIANT band was formed in 1984 by Kevin Shields (vocals/guitar) and Colm O'Ciosoig (drums) who had already worked together in the very short-lived Complex. That very same year the pair moved to Berlin where they hooked up with two new band members; Dave Conway (vocals) - who also came up with the band's name - Conway's girlfriend, Tina (keyboards). The quartet soon released a mini-album, This Is Your Bloody Valentine, with main influences such as the Cramps and the Birthday Party.

The mini-album was released on the (rather) unknown German Tycoon label and didn't exactly make a major impression on anyone (though it was later reissued in the UK). The band therefore packed their bags and crossed the North Sea to settle down in London. In the English capital, they teamed up with Debbie Googe (bass) and released a 12-inch EP Geek! on Fever in 1986. Later that year, My Bloody Valentine put out yet another EP The New Record By My Bloody Valentine as they were signed to the newly set up record label Kaleidoscope Sound. In 1987, My Bloody Valentine yet again changed their label to Lazy and out came the EP Sunny Sundae Smile and the mini-album, Ecstacy.

My Bloody Valentine then saw the departure of Conway and Tina who were replaced by Belinda Butcher. But not only did the line up change; the band's musical direction seemed to change completely too. Greatly inspired by the Scottish band the Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine now seriously lay down their own and very characteristic sound. Also, the band made a further move to Creation Records. This move meant a major reassessment in recording tecniques which the excellent You Made Me Realise EP - released in 1988 - clearly demonstrates.

It now seemed that My Bloody Valentine had finally created a style of their own; a style characterised by continiuous collages of noise and snarling guitars without 'destroying' their fascinating melodies. They released Isn't Anything in 1988 - a formidable album which really gave the band's carrier a boost in the right direction! Two years went by before they put out yet another EP Glider which, at the same time, they chose to release as a dance(-ish) remix by the DJ Andy Weatherall. November 1991 then saw the release of their most amazing album (according to me, that is!) called Loveless. With this album the band reinforced their reputation as one of the biggest influences of the late 80's UK indie scene.

Despite their increasing success, My Bloody Valentine ran into financial problems (don't we all at some point?) and huge studio bills during the early 90's forced the band to leave Creation. They were then signed by Island Records. Unfortunately, new difficulties arose as the band had major problems installing their equipment in their own built studio in South London...
Although the band has not put out anything in years, there has been no official break up. Thus, the current line up remains Shields and Butcher of which the former is touring with Primal Scream at the moment. Debbie Googe, on the other hand, has exited from My Bloody Valentine and is now playing bass in Snowpony.
