The Eagles

An American Band

The Eagles are one of the most popular rock groups in American history. They have remained popular since the 1970's (after recieving huge sucess in both the 70's and 90's). They were most influenced by country and western music and they played with a lighter, soft rock sound. Their music included bittersweet lyrics, driving instrumentals and straightforward melodies. The Eagles formed in Los Angeles in 1971 with guitarists Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon, drummer Don Henley and bassist Randy Meisner. In 1972, their first album was released, "The Eagles", and it produced two hit songs, "Take It Easy" and "Witchy Woman". Their next album "Desperado" with its hit title track was released in 1973. 1974's "On The Border" showed that the group had developed a harder sound with the addition of third guitarist Don "Fingers" Felder. 1975 brought "One Of These Nights" and The Eagles won their first Grammy award for the song "Lyin' Eyes". Bernie Leadon left the group and was soon replaced by Joe Walsh. "Hotel California" was released in 1976 to huge success. Afterwards, Randy Meisner was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit and the Eagles released their last album of original songs "The Long Run" in 1979. After the album's released, each band member embarked on solo careers. In the meantime, two volumes of Greatest Hits were issued and Volume 2 is one of the top selling albums of all time (with about 20 million sales). In 1994, The Eagles chose to regroup and released "Hell Freezes Over" which was a collection of both old and new material. The following tour was the most popular of 1994. The band toured through 1996 and enjoyed success with the album. The Eagles were just recently inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California" at the ceremonies.
