Kathleen Edwards opened the show at 10:45pm with a solo acoustic guitar/vocals act. She started with a This Minor Tremble cover but I think the rest of her set was her own songs. I really enjoyed her strong voice and incredible guitar playing (especially on the first two numbers) -- she really put on a good show.
Around midnight Jim Bryson went on and played the first number solo with his guitar. Then "the occasional band" (Ian LeFeuvre on guitar and backup vocals, Peter van Althen on drums, Tom Thompson on steel guitar, and Darren Hore on bass) joined in for the rest of the set, providing a full, rich background for Bryson -- there's something about the sound quality of his voice that just grabs you and makes you want to listen. They played a full set (and a 4-song encore) of tunes ranging in style from country-ish to rock to banjo, with maybe 1 or 2 covers but the rest being original Bryson songs (including the simple but beautiful "Elizabeth" where Jim sings accompanied only by his banjo). His songs are really something -- he really should make a CD or at least a demo tape (apparently one is in the works) so his fans can enjoy the songs every day.
The only criticism I have is that for both Edwards' and Bryson's acts it was sometimes hard to hear the quiet parts over the background noises of the bar, but I suppose that's just par for the course.
