Bob Hallett was born in St. John's, Newfoundland. The only member that was actually born in St. John's. He is one of the most talented men I have ever seen. He plays the accordion, tin whistle, fiddle, mandolin, mandola, and back-up vocals. And he does all of that extremely well. Along with these many talents, he also designed the cover art for all of the albums. He is said to be a very good photographer as well! Both of Bob's parents were also very musical, and he was encouraged to learn and practice any and every instrument he wanted. He was in his school band playing the baritone sax. He taught himself the guitar and tin whistle, so he must be a very good teacher because we can see what his lessons brought him to! Bob met Séan McCann at Memorial University where they started the Newfoundland Republican Army, a music group. That didn't last long, but they didn't give up there, they went on the form Rankin Street which was later joined by Darrell Power. In 1993, Great Big Sea was finally formed, and brought happiness and joy to all the people that heard it. Bob was also the managing editor for the Muse and Newfoundland Herald.
