Fallen Christ "Abduction ritual"
Being swayed by the opinions of others before one has observed for oneself is one of the cardinal sins of critical journalism - but who gives a shit. Especially when the band in question is Fallen Christ. I've yet to read a positive appraisal of their work, and after I've finished writing this review, that much wouldn't have changed.
I'm quite sure F.C would like to BE Morbid Angel, as opposed to just ripping them off blindly. Judging from several of the songs on "Abduction ..." they've come pretty close to the mark. Perhaps this should, in retrospect, be re- labelled as a tribute album to "Altars of Madness". I'm not terribly sure what to say about this lot. They are by no means all bad, and as far as playing tight, high-speed death metal goes, they DO hold their own. Some of the 22 songs on offer (yes, they're all VERY short, and thank god for that, or else we'd be nodding off, wouldn't we?) aren't too bad. Not good, just not too bad (in other words, mediocre).
Unfortunately, by choosing to remain so true to their
influences, F.C simply lurk in the somewhat daunting shadow cast byMorbid Angel. Couple
that with a dearth of stand-out tracks , and you can easily understand why this tape isn't
going to be spending much time in my tape deck.
News Update: Jan 1, 99:
Oberon,
I agree that
"Abduction Ritual" is a great CD, but some of the
band members are back together using the same name and playing a
NIN/Marilyn Manson type of garbage and ruining the FALLEN CHRIST
name.
As you probably know, their old drummer Alex is now in
IMMOLATION, and
their old bass player Sean is now in DEHUMANIZED.
I would never do a tribute page to a band that sucks now.

There hasn't been
anything about this great band since '96. They still happen to be together. There Bassist
plays now in DEHUMANIZED! I
mean No one even mentions there name, and for this I am completely Baffled, Not only
are they my Favourite but I think there one
of the best. This album redefines DEATH METAL and is a cult classic in my opinion, If you don't know who these guys are
I think you shoudln't even listen to the music. This is high qaulity, intricate Brutal Death at it's best, no
sound cloning here, very original. There is a MORBID ANGEL influence that can't be helped but they are
completely different. In the past People were ery skepitcal about this NY death metal group labeing them as morbid Angel
clones and so forth beccause of there guitar riffing and but I dare to say otherwise and confront that. These guys are no
were near Morbid Angel, considering that Morbid Angel do not play music like these any more or barely did. This
music is extremely compliated, Riffing, hundreds of guitar parts all in one song using every part of the guitar
every note which is very originally, with insane high and extemely low abrasive vocals. This stuff is the be all end of
Speed, hyper speed from HELL. Fallen Christ are very SATANIC. These guys are Very Ripped, tatooe covered, The
guitar player looks like CONAN so imagine the speed, velocity. Energy and conviction, tight and intricate playing
driven heavily by drummer Alex Hernandez (now in IMMOLATION), fires through trademarkblast beats -wild time
signatures combined with interesting rhythms and arrangements.
A classic piece of true
death metal! There 22 songs on this Cd, Some redone from there two previous
demo's "Infernal Majesty",
and "Abduction Ritual". FALLEN CHRIST ARE GODS AND SHOULD BE RESPECTED! So if you do see this album for sale you should buy it,
without any hesistance. "KILLER OF THE NEW BORN"
& "WORLD OF DARKNESS" is one of the greatest songs i ever heard.
This cd must be bought. Imagine "Possesssed" Bay Area thrash from the '80's classic "The Seven Churches" now imagine it played in the '90s with heavier/faster playing. This is where Morbid Angel left of at "Altars of Madness" and Fallen Christ are merley picking up the piecies were they left off and they create it with alot more ferocity with out ripping off anyone! If there was 666% out 666% this would be the only band i would give it too.

Alex Hernandez (Fallen Christ,Immolation)
played with GRIND BAND "Disassociate" When
the original drummer left. A member asked Alex if he wanted him to paly drums so he did.
They then played a punk picnic in Chicago and some N.Y.C. shows. The first CD,Controlled
Power, was recorded with Alex at World music. One day when Alex didn't show upto
rehearsal. During a show in Albany with Immolation and Darkside NYC,Immolation asked Alex
if he would try out for them, because their drummer Craig Smilowski (ex-Goreaphobia) was
leaving and was said to be kicked out. Alex let the band know shortly afterwards that he
would be leaving both bands "Fallen Christ/Diassociate" & join Immolation
who he did all the Touring On the Album "Here in the After".
